Road Racing World - first person report

The person that was videoing emailed RoadRacing World with his account of the deer strike.

When I raced cars, Summit was my home track. We had 9 races there each year plus 2 drivers schools as well as BMW, Ferrari, and Porsche Club events. In 15 years there I had heard of a deer going thru a Porsche widshield at that same location. That was the only deer strike I heard of. We did have an open wheel Formula Ford pick up a snake and it landed in the lap of the driver of the car behind him. Now that was some intense excitement. The owner of the track, Bill Scott, does his best to try anmd keep things as safe as possible. His is one of the few tracks that gets at least 1/3 of it repaved each season. If you can master this track, most others will come fairly easily.

Should the race track be liable for a racer that jumps out in front of another racer and causes an accident?

I was working at the track on the other end there were a few deer running around in the morning practice. We had them make an announcement that deer were around. And my fellow cornerworker did see the deer, did put up a flag and had the race stopped in a matter of a few seconds. We are out there, as volunteers, trying doing our best to keep the track safe for all. Accidents will still happen reguardless how much work they do to prevent them.

Chris,

As mentioned previously, I've been going to Summit for 19 years and this is the first deer strike I have heard of. There have been sightings and there may have been others, but, when you consider the number laps that have been completed, it's definitely a rare occurrence. After the incident, cornerworker Chris did a great job of hustling over to tend to the rider - same as what everyone has come to expect out of the MARRC cornerworkers. I'm sure you've heard this before, but, I've been to tracks all over the US and the MARRC cornerworkers are second to none.

I heard of a strike on the front straight also, so 2 hits in 19 years isn't too bad.

Randy, come by the cafe at lunchtime if your up there for the 4th. Wouldn't mind meeting you. I'm the only Chris who has an FJR.

I'm with OCFJR- clear cut that track. No trees=no place for the rats to hide. One of the best reasons to ride most of Nevada.
Don't forget to dig out all the dirt and replac it with concrete so there will be no ground squirrels(ground hogs here), snakes, and the others ground dwellers.

What planet are you from? Don't you boys HUNT out there? People will come shoot your ground squirrels/ground hogs every chance they get if you let them. Snakes? Mmmm, good eating. Kids are going hungry and you're providing habitat at a race park. WTF? You don't need concrete everywhere, just a little management of the conditions.

I agree with the hunting part. Unfortunately the govt agencies who practice there don't. They have tactical building setups and firing ranges all around the track, but they only allow shooting at stationary targets. I'd be all for letting the hunters out when the track is not in use. Hell, they could make it a ritual. One hour before every track day let the hunters loose. No restrictions on type of game. (Ummmmmm........ except people)

Perhaps some discussions with the owners of the complex are in order. You don't have interest in using the government agency facilities, just the complex's grounds. I'd suggest more than one hour, perhaps the day before a race weekend, depending on how heavy the schedule is. Well deployed, they could be making money on the hunters too. One day a week being set aside for hunting all over the complex and a small entry fee for the hunters.

One minor detail about the hunting. I am all for it, the meat would make good eating at the Saturday night beer parties. BUT, there are also houses fairly close by and a stray round could spoil a nice track weekend.
