I don't believe a word of it. Here we have two people both from the wrong side of the rockies and one likes barnyard animals and the other likes sea creatures. I think Reno is safe at this point. Now Scooter may be another story. You better check with is self proclaimed Papa.

 
Both bikes have a 10k rev limit, IIRC. The Gen I is lighter and has a shorter final drive ratio, so I would expect it to be quicker, but not necessarily faster. Given enough space, you might catch up to him. ;)
Gen II rev limiter is at 9250 RPM. I believe there's also a "soft" limiter that kicks in 100 or so RPMs earlier (cuts power to some, but not all cylinders). Here's some proof on the hard limit at 9250 (that's RPMs up the left side of the chart):

As for when to shift for best results, look here and you'll find out that there's really no benefit to having the extra revs of a Gen I bike: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=108817

There's only a slight gap between the torque curves of 1st and 2nd gear, so there could be a very slight advantage to more revs there, but you'll want to shift at or below 9000 RPM for the remaining gear changes.

All this Gen 1 vs Gen 2 bashing reminds me of an old joke... here reproduced with suitable edits for the Forum:

I still yield to the '03 model as the 'king of the hill' as far as raw engine power goes (no, I don't have an '03) but on paper it's tops. So, for the American version, the Gen I still wins (though we're only 'bench racing') for all practical purposes.

All this Gen II bashing leads me to believe Gen I owners are really envious of the Gen II so they have to keep convincing themselves of reasons not to upgrade. On a serious note, I owned an '05, and yes, it was a little quicker. But not for a moment would I consider trading my '08 for one. The improvements clearly out weigh the slight acceleration disadvantage, and not having my nuts cooked in the summer is huge. I can actually ride the '08 in the summer and be comfortable. The better instrumentation, the better highway feel due to the increased wheelbase and the extra electrical capacity are pluses as well. And the vacuum effect with the winshield all the way up is greatly reduced on the newer bike.

Notably, I don't think you'll find one person on this board who has upgraded to a Gen II saying that they're sorry they got rid of their Gen I to get a Gen II.

Who would admit that?
That's like buying a Bose clock radio for $800, then saying it sucks. No one will admit to an embarrassing purchase like a Gen2. :D

 
No de-tuning, just ballast and taller gears. Amounts to the same thing, though. :)

But doesn't the weight of all your farkles, car tire and carrying a spare cylinder head on a Gen I defeat the supposed weight advantage? :blink:
Only Patriot has the farkle load you speak of. My car tire is traction, it's gotta help! Cylinder head is aluminum, you don't need spare cams, so it's not heavy!

There's an old saying in 'the car biz':

"You can sell an old man a young man's car; but, you can't sell a young man an old man's car."

Gen I = young man's bike

Gen II = old man's bike

Low 9s. If the temp isn't too high. Mid 9s if it's over 85 degrees out.
