I will swear on anything you want that the following is true: if anyone else had posted the problems you talked about I would have asked them to check the plug wire and coil. I even considered it in your post, but figured that was one of the first things you would have checked.
If it makes you feel any better I teach math for a living, but once had a cashier give me an arithmetic lesson. **** happens.
Honestly, I thought I had. Cap resistance and all, for I would have counseled the same. But, I've been chasing this for a while, maybe I dreamed it. <_<
So when are you coming back to see how much better you'll be able to run the Tail of the Dragon and The Snake?

I just tore into my John Deere garden tractor to adjust the valves due to a persistent tick that showed up about two weeks ago. All done and the tick is still the same (and the lash wasn't off anyway.) Turns out it was a spark plug screw-on terminal that had unscrewed itself. I had both plugs out earlier and didn't even notice it. Too used to seeing the naked screw threads on the plug on snowmobiles connectors I guess. When I went to compare the two plug readings I noticed the screw on cap/terminal was "missing" from one and found it in the boot. The tick was the arc from the disconnected terminal. Duh... At least the valves are lashed perfect.

This thread needs to be archived for reference when we lesser weekend mechanics/automotive engineer wannabes are tearing our hair out (or stripping some cross threaded part). <_<

Oh, and the Garmin? A screw had come loose inside and, rolling around, caused an intermittent short.
Funny how that happened to it and you at the same time!!

Next time I give any advise, keep this tale in mind, and temper anything I say with a unh huh and move on.
Nah, I don't think you've lost your touch. But I am deeply concerned about what you might have done to piss Murphy off so much, and whether or not the balance has been restored yet....

Rad,

Glad you found your problem! Now I am going to check my sparkplug wires thoroughly.

So you can Fix the Sparkplug wire without buying a new one?

Thanks for the update and the excellent diagnosis. Go Frank Go....

Isn't it always the **** that we overthink that gets us into trouble.

Funny story, worth the read. Had to be something you hadn't addressed - it kept coming back no matter what you did. I bet you are thrilled that it is over.

The shame of it was I was reaaaaalllllyy hoping to laugh at you about that whole "balanced injector" pile of crap. Oh well, will have to save it for another time...
