I am planning a trip back east (Mn) next summer and never ride without my V1. Ok out here in Kalifornia but where are they illegal? What is the penalty? Also are there ANY other states where lane splittling IS legal? Just want to stay on the correct side of the law. ;)

We are the only ones that get to split lanes. I can't help you on the other question. I'm sure there is an internet site that has a database on it somewhere.

The only states or areas in the U.S. that radar detectors are banned are Virginia and Washington D.C. according to Escort Different story in some Canadian provinces.

Moving thread to appropriate area.

I stand to be corrected about other Provinces but the only one which permits their use is British Columbia. If another Province actually allows for it (doubtful, Alta. maybe?), chime in.

John.

The AMA website has a page with all the various state laws regarding motorcycling, including radar detectors, lane splitting, helmet speakers, licensing, etc.:

AMA State-by-State Motorcycle Laws

This page on the US State Department web site includes this paragraph about radar detectors in Canada:

Automobile Radar Detectors
Three provinces do not prohibit radar detectors. They are British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. All the rest (including the territories) do prohibit radar detectors. The police will confiscate radar detectors, whether in use or not, and may impose fines up to $1000.

British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan allow radar detectors.

Last I heard, so does New Brunswick and maybe Nova Scotia.

Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec definitely not. If they even see one that is not on,

they can and will take it and fine you.

Oh and the 3 top Territories do not allow it also.

They will confiscate it. Or they will let you keep it...if you lay it on the pavement and hit it with a hammer first.
Yes, it will be confiscated and the fine is around $1000 CDN. ($50 US..ha ha)

Up to then I thought a V1 was supposedly invisible to the detector detectors but apparently it isn't.
Many cops will sit with the radar not on, and watch the vehicles (So your radar detector does you no good).

When they suspect a speeding vehicle, they will flash on there radar, catching you, and your radar detector.

Most people average 120 kph (75 mph) on Cdn major highways anyway. Follow the flow and you will not be bothered.

Out on rural routes, don't speed into towns, they wait prior to their village, and sometimes on the way out. Take your chances.

The state of TX just made it legal to split lanes. But, not the way you guys in CA do it. In TX you can split lanes only at traffic tie-ups and at very low speeds.

I hope somebody from TX will chime in and talk about it in more detail. I heard it second hand and don't know what one can, or can't do in TX.

RD Detectors such as the VG-2 can sniff any of them out from nearly a mile away... Don't bring 'em to most Provinces...

John.

Ok here's what I learned. The AMA site is great, in Ca I can make tons of noise on the street but not in the forest (might scare the trees) and keep the V1 out of Canada  Thanks for all the info - Doug

It is NOT legal to lane split in Texas in Any way. Our unbeloved house and senate shelved the entire issue and our state will not look at until back in session in 2 years. I work out with a state trooper and he said he tickets anyone not maintaining their lane, except to pass on the right in certain circumstances.

This could all have changed though...who knows !!! :D

That's 1 state and 1 district (no matter how much they want everyone to think they're a state). ;)

TX did NOT make it legal to split lanes. There was a bill proposed this past session but it was not considered for a vote (so not voted for or against). There is "the developed shoulder" rule though.

Be advised that the MN legislature doubled their speeding fines recently as well as automatic loss of license (6 mos) for over 100. I once had a Quebec officer notice my RD mount -- detector was un-mounted, off, in a sack in the tank-bag. He wanted to get in the tank-bag and get it; a few words were exchanged -- but he didn't get it. Close....I pretty much don't use them anymore -- but, think they can really aid in developing awareness in one's riding. And...add to the variety/complexity of a trip (as witnessed by some of the stories told here).

RD's are legal in Saskatchewan as noted above. Cops are very anal on major highways so RD's are a good idea. Enforcement is virtually nil on backroads.
