Radial Mounted Calipers

My last sportbike was a 2000 R1. Now it seems that all front brake calipers are radially mounted. My pea brain can't seem to come up with a benefit for this set-up. I'm thinking that maybe only a very small amount of reduction in caliper flex would be the only benefit. What's the advantage? Am I missing something else?
