I'm in the market for one of these as well Jeff. Let's get those molds made!

Tom

I've got a 12" x 12" vacuum forming table here at work. Might see what I can throw together. It will turn out like a form fitting blister pack (thin flexible plastic) cover if it works.
Tom, let's see what Jeff can come up with, or if the two of you can collaborate.
This definitely has my interest! I'm looking forward to seeing Jeff's design. I only wish more of you were Beltronics fans.

Now that the word "collaborate" is out there, may I get in on this collaboration? The former mounting system of choice is no longer available, right? I need to make a mounting plate for mine anyway. If possible, I could make something that will accept Jeff's enclosure (unless he already has that covered too)

I'm using a Skyway plate which has two slots each side with velcro strap. Works great. I'd be willing to give it up (temp) for someone to examine or take measurements/fotos for a start point.

I have a unmodified one. The only problem is a small piece of the mold has broken off (the lip part). I could send you pictures to see if you think it will work. More then willing to ship your way if needed.

The idea I had was to take advantage of the standard mounting slot on top of the detector.

In the plus column, such a system would probably aid vibration damping.

In the minus column, waterproofing would need to be considered early in the design process. (It's not a problem if the enclosure is made by Glad or Ziploc)

If Jeff has a two piece design like the Legal Speeding design, the bottom piece could double as a mounting plate.

edit: ...of course the bottom piece would not be vacuum formed. It would need to be plastic or anodized aluminum.

A piece that replaces the clutch reservoir cover plate and doubles as the waterproof bottom of the detector enclosure might be cool. ;)

The skyway mounting plate isn't the only mounting method.

I am using a RAM Power Plate, which is a magnetic type of flat mounting plate. You put a small piece of self stick steel plate on the bottom of the RD (or whatever you want to mount) and the Power Plate has two very strong magnets in the plate that hold the detector in place. There is a slight recessed area in the top of the metal plate that the steel plate fits into, which also helps keep it from sliding off.

The only time that I've ever had the RD slide off was when I smacked a bambi. The RD slid forward and off, surviving by hanging from its power and audio cords. After this I started using a single web strap with a quick release buckle to make it a bit more secure. I haven't had any deer jump out in front of me since then, so apparently the strap helps scare away deer too. ;)

In order to make the Power Plate work with a Legal Speeding type cover, I had to first glue a rectangular piece of plexiglass to the bottom of the bottom cover piece, as it has a recessed area intended for velcro to be stuck in. I don't really like the idea of using velcro to hold these things on the bike. I then stuck a the steel plate to the bottom of that plexiglass shim. Like so:

Now the LS bottom cover can be magnetically coupled to the Power Plate. I also have another steel plate stuck to the bottom of the RD itself:

Primarily, that's so I can use the bare RD on the Power Plate (without the LS cover) in good weather. But when using the cover, there is just enough residual magnetism going through the plate on the bottom cover that when you place the RD on top of it you can feel it hold a little. It helps hold things in place as you get it assembled, but it is nowhere near strong enough to hold it in place without the LS top snapped on. So I use the same strap I mentioned previously to hold the LS top on.

So, here are some ideas for improvement to the old LS cover design that would make it more useful with the Power Plate:

The bottom should be flat so that one of the metal plates can be stuck on without having to shim it out.

What would be really nice would be to put some thin magnets in the bottom half of the RD Cover. The magnet polarities would have to be set to attract to a Power Plate's magnets (don't know how those are oriented, but it would be easy to figure out), and the magnets would also hold the RD in place inside of the cover better.

I think one could also do a better job with the cable entrances to the box, too. I had to cut a slot in the LS top to allow the audio cable to be used which makes it less water tight.

OK....I'm waiting to see what happens. If Jeff gets some built I'm in for one. And I'm using a Skyway plate as well.

I'm in for one of these if they get made. Tired of the Ziplock routine, and when I ride it rains. At least, it does when I ride with madmike2 (I think that's what happened to madmike1 -- he dissolved).

I have a Skyway mount in black but can't find another for a Spot (no more new ones and there are few to be found used). So, I'd be happy with a new mount if that 's part of the design of this rain cover, or if it's made for mounts currently on the market.

I've currently got my Escort 8500 X50 on the left side (clutch) reservoir, but think I'd rather have it to the right (brake) reservoir so that the slant of the readout face faces the rider for better readability. Which would leave room for a Spot tracker on the left.

Duster19 goes up a notch on the dcarver good guy scale!

I just learned that Garauld makes a reservoir-mounted radar detector bracket. Jeff, you might want to consider that mounting option. <Link>

Thanks. I bought one of Garauld's plates to have for reference. As one can obviously see from all the prior posts, there are multiple mounting methods of choice. To design the cover explicitly for one, single mounting system isn't practical.

I have a spare LegalSpeeding cover in hand now for prototyping, thanks to Fairlaner and DCarver for that. There is also someone else who is working on a master mold that apparently had a jumpstart on me. A couple of us working on the project are holding out to test his initial prototype. But I am making a mold of the spare I have just in case.

This is why I love this forum! Well, one of the reasons, anyway. :yahoo:
