O, Woe is me!!
Insurance covers gear, too, right? I'm getting new stuff from my little low-side a couple weeks ago, in addition to the tupperware and stator cover.
As for the estimate, must be a New York thing. Everything's 50 to 80% higher there, isn't it?
As for visible damage, the fork obviously. Who knows what the steering head looks like till it gets measured, same for the rear swingarm. Also, for the fork to be bent that far now, you know it went a lot further than that during the accident. Now you're looking at headers, radiator, etc. and maybe a frame tweak.

Holy crap!!!! I too am glad you walked away from this one. Car vs Cage never = good.
I didn't see a response yet, the guy that hit you had insurance right? Did an officer arrive on the scene and cite anyone? Did the older dude that hit you admit fault?
I hope the financial stuff at least works out in your favor, seeing as you already had your **** luck for the year...

Ahhh, I didn't notice the forks before, that could definitly inflate the repair costs. In that case, maybe totaled is a better deal due to possible neck frame bending?
Wfooshee - They will replace gear, but if you insurance company is like mine, I hope you have the recipts for all of it. The only thing they arn't arguing about was my helmet, but even then, they are only giving me 70% of what it was worth. Helmet wasn't even a full year old yet.

From your description, I get the impression that you didn't see what was coming in the lane you were about to merge into.
Did you trust the waving minivan driver to check the lane for you?

I have to concur. I'm really glad you weren't hurt any worse than you were. But I gotta tell you, I would never ride, let alone commute, on a motorcycle in the greater NYC area. Hell, I don't even like to drive a car in there. I mean, isn't that why they have buses, trains and subways?
When you get your '08, I'd be thinking seriously about finding greener riding pastures, If I was you...

Glad to hear you will be OK. Forget the bike. You can get another.
It gets worse and worse every year out there. Commuting is hard especially in large cities. I know that just about every time I go out in traffic in Chicago I get mad at least once at some *****.

Out of the 8 or 10 guys I regularly ride with, I'm the only one in our group that hasn't been rear-ended (yet). Toll booths are particularly bad because of cage drivers rolling up to the toll booth, while hunting for change, wallet, purse..., and not looking where they're going. A good friend nearly got taken out at a toll booth recently. Luckily he was pulling a bike trailer which absorbed a lot of the shock.
It would be interesting to take a poll to find out what the current percentage of riders have had this happen to them. I'm afraid the percentage would be pretty high.

Believe me, I never trust someone waving me on that it's OK. After all this is NYC. Some people hate bikes so much they will wave you on into the path of a tractor trailer! From the limited sight beyond the mini-van all looked clear, but obviously wasn't. But then again the old man that hit me went around the merging mini-van...where the hell was he looking before he rear-ended me?

On another front, I am being low balled by my insurance company Dairyland which is a subsidiary of Sentry Insurance Company. My bike was listed by Motorcycle Consumer News & NADA as $11,330, but after a $1,000 deductible they only want to give me $9,028. I will start a new thread on Insurance Company Customer satisfaction soon, with either a favorable review or a review that states they are happy to collect your premium, but short on paying for coverage! The ball is in their court, I'll keep everyone posted.
In the mean time an 08 is already ordered & should be delivered before the end of the year! :yahoo:

the best came out of all this your ok . I lived in bklyn for 30 years and 15 years in staten island . And have been in the city too many times and it has its beauty in the day and in the night you have to ride like a cowboy allways on thr offence the cabbies could care less about you .3 times on the george washington bridge cars came inches to me anmd 2 told me to go **** myself . And it like that in the city 2 to 4 inches in the day time if you want to get any where . Where was the accident ?

Glad your didn't break any bones. Glad you were only Slobberknockered for a short time. Are You Tap Dancing like Fred Astaire? Me bad he's dead! I almost lost half my right foot (steel toes) in the Toll Gate (another 6 inches would have been gone) 74/75?. I felt a brush on the right side of my MC as I'm paying the toll. The Collector Yelled STOP! A truck driver thought I left. The rigs front tire was enough on my foot I told him to back up. TJ :dribble:

Damn. Glad you're okay. I missed this earlier. You Halloween makes mine look petty (the day I sold my FJR). I'm glad to hear you have already ordered another bike. Trust a cager as far as you can throw them.

From another commuter, nice to hear you're OK and a new bike's on order. The one that rear-ended me was a Mexican kid in his uncle's VW bug, so no insurance and my company covered it.
What I wanted to add was that some insurance companies regularly low-ball the first number. If you ***** and scream but accept their check you're saving them money, so they figure why not. Have numbers available, talk to the claims manager or supervisor above the adjuster, and the number should go up.
