Just wondering if anyone has had arthroscopic knee surgery and how soon were you able/OK'd to ride after? Just had cartilage, ligaments, torn miniscus repaired and hoping to be riding by mid-May. How was the therapy?

Thanks

I've had the ACL in my right knee replaced twice. It hurt like Hell both times, but the second one was the worst. Since the ACL replacement is more intensive than arthroscopic, I would say you should be on your bike wihtin a few weeks. After my 1st surgery, I was on in 3 weeks, and after the second, I waited for 6 weeks to get on. My motorcycle had nothing to do with my knee being hurt, and riding post-surgery has never been an issue.

PT for me was long, but again, due to the amount of work that had to be done. Mostly, it consisted of warming up on a stationary bike, and then doing things like leg presses, balance drills, terminal knee extentions and leg lifts. It was physically challenging, but no more than what going to the gym should be like.

Use lots of ice, and for really good answers, ask your doc what he things about your activities. Not a bunch of dorks on the internet. Haha... :p

I had mine done in July of 2002. I worked very hard at physio and they said I was doing very well. I was riding the bike within a couple of weeks but my knee was not back to normal until December. I think that the key is to startt working it ASAP and not sit around. Good luck.

I donno how, but Bust happened to post that while I was typing. That was good timing you *******................. :****: :****:

I had mine done mid January. Stairs still suck but I did 500 mile ride yesterday (thanks to Wild Bill pegs). Not ready for trials riding yet-soon I hope.

Now that's funny!

:good: :haha: :lol2:

my 14 year old had it past Feb 17th

she's back to normal and doing cheerleading/gymnastics

on crutches about a week and had 4 weeks/3 days a week physical therapy

by fourth week post op, she was getting around fine and started working up to normal activities

could walk all the way around the block with no issues at 5 weeks

I don't know if she's running

now, caveat, she had some infected tissue in there which was scraped and removed

nothing mechanical was wrong

kids bounce back quickly, she listened and obeyed all instructions from everybody, and nothing damaged other than small infection on inside

took care of the pain, thank the stars

All right guys, thanks! My injury is not bike related either but didn't make for enjoyable distance riding. I'll see how this goes then Doc wants to do the other knee afterwards. Guess I gotta explain to him about riding-sometimes they just don't get it!

Had mine done in March 2006, just a torn meniscus and some small clean-up work. Recovery was fairly short, and I was back to working out within 3 or 4 weeks. After like two months, there was no pain while walking, sitting, light workouts, yardwork, etc.

However, in July of that year (a little less than 3 months after the surgery), I did a track day on my SuperHawk. The force of hanging off the bike on a very busy, curvy course (Mid-America Motorplex, near Council Bluffs, Iowa), caused my knee to start to really ache. I popped a few Motrin, and continued riding. However, I could only do about 15 or 20 minutes, and I'd have to come in for a break. Five or ten minutes of sitting in a lawn chair, and I could go back out. Normal street riding for a month before the track day revealed no pain, so it was the added stress of track riding that pushed the envelope.

As far as recovery, keep it elevated, and keep it iced. I had it done on a Thursday, and was back at work Monday morning, no crutches required. However, as you know, every knee will be different. YMMV. Good luck, and listen to your doctor!

i had a torn meniscus (sp). i hope your surgeon is better than mine was. it got better than it was after the injury but never back 100%. in fact i qualified for my "blue placard" last year specifically because of that knee.

I had arthroscopic surgery Feb '09 to trim a torn meniscus on the same knee that had torn ACL and MCL in years past. Doc said I'd need a new knee in 5 - 10 years and also said I'd not play singles tennis again. Hurt like hell for a week but improved after that. Rode the first time a month later.

Have played tennis twice in the last week for short periods. Working up to regular matches.

Had a torn meniscus trimmed in the left knee many years ago. My recovery was about 6 weeks with lots of phys. therapy. I'm looking at new knees in about 4-5 years -- so the Doc say.

I have had it done 3 times on 1 knee and twice in the other. Both of mine are a mess. PT helped, but after the first i pretty much knew the routine. I could ride after 3 weeks but it hurt a lot. I added my first maxi-Scooter and that helped with the riding fix. I need to have both of mine replaced at some point.

My doctor took his little dremel tool to my torn meniscus about 4 years ago. It hurt like hell for two days. I was able to walk adequately with crutches after that. No crutches in 4-5 days. It was about 5-6 weeks before I could run again.

I think I was off the bike about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. Mostly to let the swelling go down so I could bend the knee enough.

My wife had her ACL replaced and rode her motorcycle to the doctor for her follow up a few weeks later.

I had my ACL replaced in my right knee in '86. I have had the right knee scoped twice since. The left knee has been scoped once and eight weeks ago I had Microfracture surgery done on the left knee. Dr. thought I had a torn meniscus but I didn't.

The scopes were just to clean out the knee, recovery was pretty quick, couple of weeks, and without physical therapy. The microfracture was much more invasive and required six weeks on crutches with six weeks physical therapy. I am now at week eight with four weeks of physical therapy left. I was cleared by my doctor and physical therapy to ride again on Thursday. I got home and took my first ride since fall.

Good luck and hope you have a quick recovery.

All you arthro boys are lucky.....

I destroyed both my ACL, MCL and meniscus playing football in high school. 8 months in a cast from toes to crotch.

Tore the replacements 3 more times 1 - playing softball, 2 - bowling, and 3 - skiing. Nothing left in there but scar tissue.

You have NO idea how lucky arthroscopic surgery was invented.
