Has anyone here removed their side bag relectors and have pictures. I'm thinking of removing all reflectors from this bike, especially the sidebag and fork reflectors. Have already removed Yamaha emblems on gas tank. I know I'm a FNG but the bike is new and I want to keep it looking that way as long as possible. These "extra" artifacts are a pain in the *** to clean and wax around.

I haven't done it, but I remember from previous conversations about this, that they are simply stuck on with really strong double adhesive foam type tape. I saw many bikes at NAFO without reflectors on the side bags and there were no holes in the bags for them to be secured with screws.

But, removing the reflectors isn't always a wise thing to do, especially if you suffer from the dreaded ignition failure at night.

Remove the reflectors?? Am I wrong in thinking they would deflect some of the damage in a drop? And don't they add to overall visibility! I clean my bike after (just about) every ride and don't find them a problem at all

If you ever plan on taking the bike out at night, leave the reflectors on. If you park it at sunset (for waxing, of course), the sidebag reflectors come off with a heatgun, and clean up with goo gone.

If the reflectors were installed by the manufacturer, removing the basic bike reflectors can result in a mechanical citation. If your State has safety inspections like Maryland's (a one-time inspection to register after purchase), this is an automatic failure. Again, this is for the basic bike, not the bags.

Woot! It's Friday! But I'll be nice, anyway... :p

Reflectors pop right off. Slight heat to the inside of the bag lid, vice grips to the reflector and twist. Note: If they've been on a while, you might see a slight discoloration of the paint, but that will soon oxidize to match the rest.

As for damage by a drop mitigated by the reflectors; forget it. Most of the damage occurs to the front of the bags.

Good to know - thanks! I'm taking an ERC end of the month and am going to strategically place some tape :glare:

Reflectors removed.

Removed as soon as I got the bike. The longer you wait the more chance of there being a noticable rectangle on the bag from adhesive or slight pain fade.

& I added to mine - see left. 3M tape cut to add my personal preferences! It is almost invisible in daylight but jumps out when hit by lights on a dark road!

I would NEVER consider removing every decal and reflector from my all-black baby within 2 hours of taking delivery... NEVER!

Ditto what TWN said... removal is easy...

...with the exception of that damned tank WARNING sticker... it just sucks!

Well its off with all of them. I like the look without the reflectors, tank sticker, tank emblems, and what the hell is with that goofy 1300 swirly thing-a-ma-jig on the front fairings. That ones going to be a ***** to remove. I want a black bike and not one with the tacky reflectors that crack, fade and just look like ***. Thanks for all the replies, pros and cons, and thank you especially for the pictures. Monday this FJR will look different than it does today.

Started pulling on mine at the dealers during delivery. Didn't understand why they was all uptight and **** till they rolled mine in from the service area.

Okay for those of us that have screwed up and decided not to get an older model, Duff how did you remove that fairing decal. That little POS is in 2 layers.

OK, I lied a little bit earlier...

The fairing decals are also a royal PITA!

  • *First, warm them up
*Then peel them as best you can. No, you will not get them off clean. Most likely, they will seperate and leave a nice sticky residue on the fairing.

*Start rubbing with the remaining adhesive with your thumbs...

*Rub some more...

*Harder...

*Got a blister yet? When you do, you are halfway done.

*Use the OTHER thumb now...

*Got a blister?

*You should be finished removing that decal.

*Now, get you WD-40 or whatever YOU think is the best goo/sticky remover.

*Remove any remaining adhesive, wash the WD-40 (or you favorite brand) off the fairing

*Wax the fairing

*Repeat for the other side and for the gas tank sticker.

*Be aware of the FUEL in your gas tank and your HEAT SOURCE (fuel + heat = mess)

Honest, that is how I removed them.
