I've been reading about people camping while they travel, reading about a camping meet in Kali, and have camped a little bit on previous mcy trips.

I was wondering if people would be interested in a regional camping meet that is based somewhere in the Appalacians for 2 or 3 days. I'm thinking late spring or very early summer (ie comfortable, not too cold at night, not too hot during the day, and late enough so there is lesser likelyhood for rain).

I'm thinking base camp for 2 or 3 days, in a great area for mcy riding, so we can rip around( or sightsee) during the day, and group camp at night. I'm looking for camping recommendations in the southern WV, far eastern KY, northeastern TN, far western VA, and northwestern NC areas.

Maybe we could have one group meal, but I presume it would be best if everybody fixes their own meals, as people will be coming back from their rides at different times...but then we could have a group campfire at night to discuss the days riding, share a beverage or two, lie about how good you are on an FJR, and kickback under the stars. :)

Does that sound good to you? ...If so, chime in in this here thread. :clapping:

I've never organized a regional camping meet before, but if somebody gives some good recommendations, and I get some help, maybe we can get this thing off the ground.

Make it around CFR. CFO times and I am in..........cept I will need to borrow a sleeping bag and a tarp

B - there's also this event in beautiful and quaint St Andrews-By-the-Sea ! All part of my neck of the woods - which I'd love to show you. We could take the "long way around" which is one of my favorite NB rides :)
I can see having to quit my job and play hooky all summer

That's why I'm buying loto tickets these days. Sorry to (kind of) hijack your thread Wheatie

Okay now...

...back to the topic at hand. Who's interested? and who has some suggestions for campgrounds in the areas mentioned?

I got some good info pm'd to me from a certain darksider...anybody else?

Damn you, Wheatie. I couldn't sleep last night thinking of the camping I was supposed to do on my October ride to NC. Very sadly, those plans got scuttled :(

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work I go.... with < 2 hours of sleep

OK, I'm in if the schedule doesn't conflict with CFR.

Regarding campgrounds, you can go high class and use something like a KOA with a pool and showers and such, or you can go to a state park, which would typically have flush toilets and running water, but not much more.

One suggestion to consider is Watoga State Park in WV. It is on 219, less than an hour north of Lewisburg and not far from Seneca Rocks. They have cabins for people who are not interested in sleeping in a tent. I have not stayed there, but it looks like a nice place.

Wheatie: The Stanley Boys would be interested in this. First, if you could arrange dates coinciding with going to or back from CFR we'd be "In Like Flynn". Second, if you could go with a park like Geezer recommended, we'd join in this event for sure.

With a 61 year old and 13 year old being out on the road for 2 FJR weeks to attend CFR, we'll not have room for camp gear!

Thanks for the suggestions Greg.

I'd be interested, but we might need to think about going after mid-September to ensure that it isn't so hot at night. There should be several state parks that would work in the area you mentioned.

I am thinking sometime next late spring if possible. I am concerned that June is too hot for camping and that sometime in May would be better.

EDIT: I wish I could schedule something in June to coincide between CFO and CFR if it made sense from a "heat" standpoint. I don't live in the desert, so heat is not something I'm going to be acclimatized to. (However, I won't schedule it then if the historical temps are too high...which would make everybody miserable. See post #1)

I will be investigating average highs and lows at the various elevations of the possible camping spots to assist in determining the time frame for this event.
