I'd be interested, but we might need to think about going after mid-September to ensure that it isn't so hot at night.
Actually, mid September & earlier is the best time to camp in the area that Mark is talking about. Past mid September starts getting cold at night fairly often. May & June are definitely good times.

If you camp in July or August, keep your day rides to the high country.

Wataga is a great spot. There are also a couple of off-shoots right in the same area.

I've camped twice @ Seneca Shadows Campground. That was also a decent facility.

I'll keep an eye out to see how this develops. Chances are I'd be in.

Heidi,

Can't June be pretty hot (sometime betwen CFO and CFR -circa June 14 to June 20) be pretty hot? Or does the elevation help in WV at Wataga?

I was really interested in Breaks Interstate based on your RR until I found out they don't take reservations. :(

I'm looking for camping recommendations in the southern WV, far eastern KY, northeastern TN, far western VA, and northwestern NC areas.
Mt. Pisgah, mile 408.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, has a campground:

https://www.recreation.gov/campgroundDetail...mp;parkId=75021

and a lodge. View from the lodge is the most spectacular of anywhere on the Parkway, IMHO. Elevation is 5000', so summer heat isn't a concern (no AC in the lodge rooms). Great riding almost anywhere in the area. Also a MC campground about 4 miles down Rt. 276 from the Parkway toward Cruso, NC:

https://www.blueridgemotorcyclecamp.com/

I don't camp anymore (old body doesn't like sleeping on the ground), but it sounds like a great idea.

Geez, I posted yesterday but must have forgot to hit the "add reply" button, so to repeat:

I AM IN...

Last April, a group of us stayed at a Motorcycle cabin/campground we liked mucho...it's 1 mile from the west side of the Cherohala Skyway. At the Skyway entrance in Tellico Plains is a great all meal restaurant run by a biker family.

The place is HUNTS LODGE and I highly recommend it for that area...reasonable prices, very nice cabins and facilities for all to use...and owners make coffee for everyone every morning.

My schedule is kinda crazy and includes SFO May 12-16.

Last weekend of March or first weekend of April is my invitation to all - BEFA Nawlins' Ride to Eat event.

let's ride safe and be careful out there,

Mike in Nawlins'

It's been a long week...Thanksgiving, fixing my house from broken pipe flood, foster dog potential adopters visits, SAINTS 10 n oh and tonight gonna whip the Pats...

Just got Isabella back...she's in the hanger...I wheelied her in the door :yahoo:

Been a bit distracted and need to stopping drinking and taking meds at the same time

Add me to the interested list.

I love loading up the bike for the weekend. Usually camp at a different place every night so a base camp trip would be great. We try to find the state parks because they generally have nice facilities. So far I have not been disappointed with any of the state parks I have stayed at in WV and TENN. You just have to keep in mind that most state park prohibit alcohol, so I generally carry liquor and mix it into coke bottles. :D

The elevation will offset the warmer temps. If you stay above 1500ft temp will only matter if it cools down at night.

I'm in.Love that motorcycle camping.

I second Seneca Shadows campground, good campground and some good riding in the area.

Willville Campground outside of Floyd Virgina is a good friendly motorcycle only campground worth considering.Right on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Willville last June...

I'll plan to join in. Love camping with the cycle.

On a recent family vacation we stayed at a county park near Beckley, WV that was pretty nice. www.lakestephenswv.com We also drove through Twin Falls State Park and it was pretty nice as well.

We spent one day rafting on the New River and another day riding ATV's on the Hatfield-McCoy trails. Lots of fun. Too bad I was driving an Excursion for the week instead of the FJR!

I'd probably be in. Love riding in the mountains and have been up there from time to time, even camped from the bike. Couple of notes from my experience:

Federal parks on the BRP don't have showers for campers; you would need to stay at the lodges available at some of the Fed campgrounds. No alcohol allowed there iirc, so the old coke bottle trick is what I used. I forget the milemarker where I stayed, but ended up taking a cold sink bath the next morning.

Quite a few motorcycle campgrounds in the area; haven't stayed at any but some have good reviews; anyone stayed at any? One of these actually would probably be a great option I think as they cater to folks like us.

Many private campgrounds offer better facilities and even food/restaurants of sorts; there again each is different with no standard so it would be easy to get a bad one IMO, so some research would be advised.

State campgrounds are generally great, but again usually no alcohol.

My old bones don't camp well, but I do have a decent motorcycle setup and can hang with it if needed as long as I have some self-medication at night...

I vote for May or June; should be cool at night in the mountains and not too hot during the day. Of course, I live in Florida so that would be downright like a winter day/night to me compared to what I'm used to.

Last time I was up there I stayed at the Deals Gap Resort and had a great time. Mixed crowd of motorcyclists from old Goldwingers, HD's, sportbikes, and whatever else. We all sat around the big firering and BS'd to midnight or so and I didn't know any of them before or since. Sat and watched all the squids shooting up the hill leading into the Dragon. I had camping gear and they do have plenty of room and showers, but actually stayed in a room for $65/night. The rooms had a double bed and two bunkbeds, plus big shelves for gear. They were simple and clean.

That area is a dry county so you need to pack in your adult beverages, but it was no issue when I was there. They have BBQ areas, but I ate at the restaurant there before it closed for the night and found it reasonably priced and quality for what I needed. Didn't have to break out the can of Chef-Boy-R-Dee spaghettios I keep in the saddlebags for my camp experiences...

Actually the last time I was there I went to a private biker party near Fancy Gap, VA and slept on the floor of the host's rec room, but that's another story.

I'd better stop waving to the park police with a beer in my hand! I didn't know that. Why do they sell the alcohol in the camp stores there?

I've camped at quite a few campgrounds on sld/brp and they all had hot showers, for a price. Have to load quarters in for 5min.

Alot of people expressing interest for a Appalacian camping meet and ride...

A total of 35 have expressed interest between this board and FJRiders. :clapping:

Given the good roads and scenery around this area, even if only a small fraction can make it, that sounds like a pretty good time. B)
