Removing Lid From Shad SH48 For Painting

My Shad SH48 top case finally arrived and I want to get it off to Garauld for painting.

I want to paint the entire lid, not just the removable panel, to have it painted to match my bike. I need direction on how to remove the hinge pins to make this possible. They seemed pressed in.

Any suggestions?

The modus operandi for removing hinge pins (at least on the Givi) is to drill a small hole into the hinge away from the end they pressed the pins in and then, using either a small pin punch or a nail inserted thru the new hole, gently hammer the hinge pin out the way it was installed. I guess if the hole was big enough, you could just push the pin thru the new hole.

On what make/model case did you do this? Do you have a picture of it painted?

Pm sent.. I ended up buying another top half as I didn't appeal to me. paint removal wasn't an option.

With just the top insert painted you still see mostly black on the case. I had considered selling the Givi I got with the bike for the Givi or Shad with the insert. I searched for pics of bikes with the color insert and didn't think they tied in well with the rear bags so I went with the full top paint. Now It ties in nicely with the rear bags, whereas before it just looked like a big black aftermarket add-on.

You can use one of free the photo editing programs to get a good picture of your bike and then 'paint' the case or parts of it to give you an idea of what it will look like. I've done this on other projects and it was helpful.

Would it be easier to drill out the rivets on the hinges rather than trying to remove the hinge pin?

A pop rivet gun and rivets would run you about $25.

Hinges are molded into the box, not riveted. I think the lid can be painted while still attached to the box with a little ingenuity with taping around the hinge.

BTW STFU, even though our top boxes aren't the same I actually like the way your bike looks with the lid painted.
