I wish I had as much time to ride John,

Looks like fun.

Gerry

Spent a (looooong) weekend logging a few thousand miles of some wonderful crazy shit in NorCA and southern OR. Lots of dirt, many amazing sites, places and some just weird encounters to boot.
A few teaser pics below ...but you gotta see the trip report to get the groove.

enjoy ...renojohn

John, I'm impressed. Also, I've got a sore ass. Feel like I just rode a few hundred miles of dirt! I think it's pretty gutsy to take off into such wilderness. I'd be worrying so much about my next gas or some kind of mechanical snafu or just downright getting lost I don't know if I'd ever have the nerve, but sure enjoy it when you do. Thanks.

Thanks for the fun words everyone.

Yep, riding moto-bikes through bizarre places is pretty damn good fun. ....and norCA, Oregon and Idaho (of course NV goes without saying) are some of the best places to do it IMO ...always new roads and new towns to uncover.

So, did you manage to get your name on any of those cool 86 lists?
LOL, they had to start a new list for me: The 87 list ----for taking it one step above getting 86'd.

...and Dale,

yes Powers has some phreakky shit, much of it beyond belief. <_<

RJ, I'll be I'm the only other cat on this board who's been to Hayfork and Hyampom. Went to school at Chico, and was a whitewater rafting guide. A buddy of mine and me went over late one winter and rafted the Hayfork river.

We had to hitchhike to get someone to shuttle our car from the "put-in" to the "take-out", and at 7am, two guys came driving up (the only car we'd seen in 12 hours on that road), completely drunk on that windy-ass road to Hayfork and drove our car down for us. We thought we'd never see it again.

Hayfork might as well be Arkansas or something. It's amazing that a place like that exists in the populous state in the Union.

Great trip report, pal. Thanks for sharing.

And by the way, with Jamarcus Russell, the Raiders need to get a little more "vertical" in their offense. It's like never taking an FJR out of third gear.

As usual, great ride report and pics that just keeps one in awe. I use to go "run the hounds" with my dad when I was much younger up around Hayfork and off 36. We tracked bear, lions, coon and bobcats. Unforgettable stuff. Like you we could go for days and not see anyone but the critters that own that area. That's what got me into Jeeping and then dirt bikes and finally street riding.

Keep up the good work John! ;)

LOL funny ZIP! 7:00am only one you could find was drunk, -why am I not surprised --and yes that road from Hyampom is nuts -unfortunately they're working on it hard to make it sane. Hayfork is weird, been going there since a kid for school sports etc .....if it wasn't on hwy3 it would really be obscure. Hyampom on the other hand is much more obscure. We'll have to trade some (chico) "Pioneer Days" stories of years back. 1985 -I have a good story for you ....not sure when you were there. Thanks for the note.

Yep, Painster, that little corner of planet earth is very very special.

Reno John as always a great report.

BUt you need to contac Suzuki and do a commercial for them for thebike you ride the V Strom, have them sponsor or pay for your trips

The Laporte area used to camp and mountain bike that area and that park found it by accident one day. And the Covelo area from your report it has gotten worse since i have been their deer hunting back in the late 60's. BUt I still remember people telling me about the indians drinking firewater and going crazy. Got to see it first hand.

RJ - looking forward to some of these rides with you. Great fun, back roads, (and people) are great learning experiences.

I want to play too! You have a certain way of riding - much more advanced than mine.. I could learn from you.. the Fun Factor is always off the peg with you.. Great stuff RJ.

LOL - Great fun, Great Roads, a mini-Adventure in the backyard, so too speak (as compared to StrikingViking and others on AdvRider who travel the world)..

Lots of fun..

2010?

I finally took the time to read this and look at the pictures. Great job as usual, John! :clapping:

Of course, it's easier when you are able to select great roads and scenery......

Another epic RenoJohn adventure. :yahoo:

Fabulous, John!! Just Fabulous!!

Question: Could you have ridden these dirt roads on the FJR? Were there sections that would be impassable on a FJR? Specifically Graegle to La Porte, and Bair Rd./Bald Hills Rd. I know the others in California are doable. I've never dropped this bike so I avoid deep powdered dust and smooth, large boulders to keep it that way. Many, many thanks for stimulating this old brain to explore possibilities never before concidered.

Lots of different sections I was on so can't lump them all together.
With determination the FJR can go anywhere you're willing to take it IMO (and you likely agree) ...BUT, many of the roads I was on, the FJR would not be the ideal mount. Johnstown to LaPorte has some pretty rough/rocky/steep sections that would not be fun on the FJR. The road from Corning to Covelo could certainly be done ...but still a few dicey sections. Even on the strom I was under 20mph in many many sections with rocks right loose steep turns etc. From Covelo north up to Zenia .....no problem on the FJR. As far as the road from Mad River to Hyampom .....the descent would not be much fun on the FJR -again due to rocks and steep sharp turns. Galice to Powers, sure not problem, but often can get pretty loose, washboard in summer and mud much of the year. BTW, none of the dirt I was on are passable during winter, with the exception of Bald Mountain.

So it's a mix. I ride the fjr in a lot of dirt, sure I could have got through on these roads, but many sections would have not been much fun.

OH, ...and finally, bald hill road from Orick to Weitchipec would be no problem on the FJR. Packed gravel ....often a bid muddy on the steep descent on the east end but that is brief. Hope that kinda answers your question.
