So… there I was last Monday, returning from class on my way back to work, minding my own business while waiting for the light to turn green… car on the right, big-ass pickup on the left… I look down at the rear view mirror and to my surprise I see two small “modified” Japanese-looking cars approaching at a rather high speed. They seem to be street racing, I interpret their approach as hostile and prepare to move out of the f-ing way… as they are about 100 feet away from me, the light turns green and now both are trying to funnel their way through traffic and into my path… I quickly check for red-light runners left and right and took off from the light like a bat out of hell, I glance down to check my mirrors, and one of the f-kers is less than 6 feet from my tail… I am still on second gear so I just gunned it. I thanked all my blessings when the mighty FJR got me safely out of harm’s way in a flash. When I looked back down at the mirrors, the suns-a-******* were about 100 feet away BEHIND ME and I was able to decelerate and move to the right and let them pass. I casually took a peep at the “tach” and… OMG was higher than 10K rpm, then it came back to me that I was still on second gear and that I had to shift up. The whole deal seemed to take place in slow motion, but it really only took a few seconds. I thought that this bike had a rev limiter, but apparently it doesn’t, it’ll give you what you ask from it, and then some more. I had to stop at the next gas station for a change of diapers and to plop the nitro pill. Other than that I made it safely back to work. When I got home and gave Pandora a bath and a couple of smooches for saving my butt. What a great bike!!!

-I guess Vin Diesel's got nothin' on you! Maybe you can get a part in 'Still Faster and Still Furious'. Seriously though, glad to see you were unscathed. Congrats on your 'heads-up' scanning. Not the kind of rush you were looking for, I'm sure.

I believe it's a good thing to check on occasion just to be sure it's still there. ;)
True, but I don't recommend testing the tip-over engine kill switch. :( Unfortunately, mine tested good last time. The rev limiter isn't much fun to test either. Best to shift just before you hit it. :D

Well, that explains it! I ran mine into the red (10k ish) trying to get by a cavalcade of cars stuck behind the proverbial U-Haul. Once safely past, I thought, hey, wait a minute. Isn't this bike supposed to have a rev-limiter? So, now I know - 10.5, here I come!

Congrats on the heads up move of checking the mirrors and gettin out of the way!

I guess I didn't gunned it hard enough because it never did cut the engine off. I am positive that it was above 10k, but I couldn't tell by how much because when I saw it, it was already coming back down. Anyhow, I sure appreciated that it was not set at 9k!!!

Also, I got the impression that the front tire left the ground for a brief moment, but since I didn't feel it hitting back down, I cannot be sure if it did or not. Besides, all 255 pounds of me were very friendly with the handlebars at the time as I was leaning forward trying no to slide off the bike.

Frank, glad you made it through this OK. I remember the wide 3 lane roads in Chandler when I was there over Labor Day weekend and rode with you and Don. Hate to think what could have happended if you stayed at the light.

Having never hit the rev limiter I am curious as to what happens? Given Two Wheel's response the bike obviously slows very quickly but is this because the throttle is cut off? Mechanically speaking what happens when the limit is reached?

I haven't hit it yet, but I though the rev limiter was supposed to kick in gradually. It should take out two cylinders at first and then, if you keep pushing it, the other two. Maybe in lower gears it happens so fast that all four are taken out before you realize it.

Actually, it's electronically speaking....

Fuel injection shuts off. That simple. Hit the RPM roof and the fuel supply shuts down...revs drop...fuel comes back on...revs build back up...hit the roof, repeat.

It's kinda like an acceleration version of ABS kicking in.

AAAHHHH....

Until the idiot on the loud handle finally realizes whatinhell is going on.

But the FJR has a two-stage limiter. Two cylinders cut off at 10,500 and the other two cut off at 11,000. (I may have those numbers wrong, but you get the idea).

How about those that have the EFI extras like the Dyna commander or other manufacturers? Does those units eliminate the rev limiter all together, and if in the same situation, have a little more room to accelerate? By the way, since I wasn't in that situation, was there an option to pull behind the pickup while the imports blew pass, instead of accelerating in front of the traffic? I had a similar situation and was tagged by a local sheriff going 75 in a 35 speed zone, and explained I needed to pass the traffic to get out of the "racers" way, he just stood there with a puzzled face and asked "where?".

Rev limiter still applies with the Power Commander.

I wouldn't say the bike slows down much when you hit the first stage of the rev limiter, but there's no more acceleration. You'll find yourself flying forward because the acceleration party has suddenly come to an end. Definitely time to shift. I can't figure out how to hit the second stage because the first stage is so effective.
