Saturday I put 542 miles on my 2012. After about 200 I got those sore pressure points in my *** but it was bearable and intermittent. After a 15 minute break it disappeared for a while.

At about 400 miles my *** was ok but my left hip and knee started to ache a little, again intermittently. I think a set of pegs up front will take care of that. I wasn't sore (butt or legs) when I got home and haven't been since.

As much as I'd like to try a Russell I'm hesitant to spend the bucks just yet - AND I'm a short guy for the FJR (5'6" , 29" inseam). Riding solo I'm on my toes so I need to keep my sear low. I'm a little concerned about spending the $$ and it making little difference. Considering the length of ride I really wasn't that uncomfortable. However, I do plan to take a lot of long rides so I decided to order the Airhawk 2 for slabbing and running the non-twisty stuff. We'll see if that does the trick since I did ok with the stock seat. If it doesn't make a difference I'll take them up on the 60 day money back guarantee.

Saturday's ride report:

Just ordered plates and pegs for $120.25 (I got the longer pegs with rubber inserts). This should take care of my knee being a cry baby at 400 miles :p

Very nice pegs!!and with the rubber inserts they looks greate!!now i hope you dont cry.. :)

After 100 miles in the saddle by butt is sore and my hips start hurting and sending pain down my legs. If I stand up for a quick minute or stop and walk around it goes away for 20 plus miles and then gets sore again.

If the pain is on the outside of your thigh, knee, ankle and over your instep, that's classic sciatic nerve pain often caused by a herniated disc pressing on the nerve. If the herniation is mild enough, moving around and changing positions is a good way to relieve that pressure.

Or your seat sucks .. but I would be remiss if I didn't point out the very similar symptoms of a pinched sciatic nerve, especially when it might be early enough to perform physical therapy to prevent it from getting worse. DAMHIK.

I had a Sargent on my Honda VFR for 5 years and love it. :)
Me too! When my friend's Rick Mayer seats are squished down and worn out, the Sargent on the VFR has lasted eleven years and 96k and the Atomic Foam is holding up well.

I hear you. Fortunately, the knee was a joint twinge from being in the same position for too much of the day. Once I moved my leg into a different position it went away. The hip "ache" was only once and very mild.

But thanks for the info! Ya never know...

Ok I must be weird. I read everything about the pain everyone is feeling from the stock seat and mine is a little bit different. Not the hips or knees. I think it has more to do with my chioce of riding clothes. Go ahead and hammer away I normally ride in jeans. Well the jeans bunch up in the front and after several hours I get all uncomfortable in the unmentionable region. Standing on the pegs helps somewhat - stopping and taking a walk also helps. I am wondering if the seat make it worse because I am sliding forward up against the tank?

When people wear mesh pants is it common to wear a pair of cargo shorts underneath or bicycle shorts? We are coming into the summer here in Texas and it gets pretty toasty in the afternoons. 100 degree air temp, heat off the road and a little heat from the bike. Making some ball soup. I was thinking if I had some good mesh pants with knee and hip coverage that would allow air through to bare legs under the mesh that would be the bomb. I wear a t shirt under my mesh jacket its about the same right. Thoughts?

Agreed. I've been wearing light cargo pants under the mesh pants. When it gets hot enough I'll switch to cargo shorts underneath.

There are a couple of options out there for riding underwear, specifically designed for long distance riders. One of them is called (I think) LDRider, I can't remember the other. This stuff has no seams in the seating area, wicks the moisture away and keeps your manly parts from squishing into the tank, seat, etc. It was developed by a guy who did some Iron Butt Riding. I feel silly talking about underwear, but it's good stuff.

Yes! Thats it.! Thank you, now you are the one responsible for selling underwear on the forum. On the plus side when you put them on you can turn sideways to the mirror and it will look (to you anyway) like you have the equipment to be an adult film star.

Mario (the owner of LDComfort) is a great guy and supports the different rallies like hardly anyone else. His stuff was designed with input from those who ride the wheels off their bikes, so they work (and work well).

+1 on the LDComfort stuff! I use their long sleeved shirt and tights year round...excellent layer for under the suit (Roadcrafter).

I have this issue also. What I've done so far is the Spencer rebuilt seat ($75 I believe it was) helped alot but not perfect, added an Alaska Sheepskin again helped but not there yet, now I've added a Airhawk R uder the sheepskin. The Airhawk R has a channel down the center, this relieves pressure "down there" and allows air flow also. If you get the amount of air right in the airhawk going thru the twisties isn't an issue.
