In my earlier riding days i used to get four different cycle magazines

Most of the information in the issues were repeated in the other magazines too

so there wasn't much of an advantage in getting all 4 but i did anyway for about 10 years.

Now Rider magazine seems to fit me a little better but i was wondering if there is

actually another cycle magazine that fits the sport touring even better?

U.S. only i guess.. I know there is another mag in the Uk that is suposed to be good too.

 
IMO, motorcyle magazines are nothing more than something to pass the time while in the can. You can get a ton more info the 'net for free (and more up to date) than you can in any ragazine.

 
I'm not a fan of Rider, but some are. At $10 or so for an intro subscription, why not take a flyer on it?

Personally, I keep a long-term subscription to Cycle World to have an overall survey of the sport and to read their columnists (Egan, Edwards, and Cameron). The photography alone is worth the small subscription price. Everything else, I buy one issue at a time on the newstand, mostly Bike.

I've found that one's value for any motorcycle magazine is inversely proportional to how long you've been reading it, so why not sleep around?

Rider is the only magazine I've found that caters to the ST community. Let me know if you find another.

 
One of the magazines that I've found fairly enjoyable to read is Sportbike Tuner or something like that.

I like Rider. There bias is towards long distance stuff & better at ride reports. $10/yr and they will offer renewals at the same price. The Brit mags are great but pricey. Some mags give riding tips. Yeah you can get a lot of info online but having any moto mag is nice because you can take it anywhere & toss or give it away when finished.

 
I get Rider and Cycle World. I like the touring stories in Rider, but they are very weak when it comes to technical details. Cycle World does a good job on technical details, plus I like Egan and Cameron, so I went with Cycle World as my other selection. (Actually, Rider is my other. If I had to choose, I would pick Cycle World.)

Here is one example of technical weakness: When Rider does a bike test, their technical panel includes a "Indicated RPM at 60 mph" entry. They are too lazy to spend a couple of minutes figuring out the real engine speed, so they just use the tach and speedo, which both can be sources of considerable error. On bikes without tachs, they just put in NA. I wrote to complain about this a few years ago. The response was basically 'we know how to calculate it, but nobody seems to care, so we aren't going to make the effort.' If they think nobody cares, why list it at all? Cycle World actually gives a calculated value.

Concur with Randy's observation.... the vast majority of moto-ragazines are primarily for entertainment value only.

This doesn't include several of the Brit magazines, which are quite excellent even though a bit pricey compared to the America rags.

Ironically, I have maintained a subscription to RoadRunner and MCN over the years. I need good fodder in the can and can never fully convince my self to let them lapse.

A couple of UK magazines I like better than Rider are:

“Bike” which has a pretty good lay out and is fairly non biased.

“Motorcycle Sport and Leisure” which is geared a little more towards sport touring.

Another magazine I just picked up is “Road Runner” which is exclusively about travel and touring.

Motorcycle consumer news is a good read.

Motorcycle Consumer News is good for wiping after you're done reading the other magazines while sitting on the can. I can't tell you how many products I bought at their recommendation, just to find out they were pure crap. It's the magazine of Pseudo-science. I'm with Randy and Warchild. Mags are for entertainment value.

 
I buy them all, and leave them by the can...like Randy said, thats the only place I read them..only because I dont have a computer in the restroom yet :D

with you there on the UK mags...I buy them often regardles of price

 
I have one of those jobs that gives me a little reading time but they dont allow computer time on internet sites so i just wanted at least one bike mag to read.

m.c.n. is the best very in depth on just about everything to do about motorcycles and the next issue will be there first in color and there is no sponsors . Also i do get 3 others cycle worlds \, mototcyclists and rider
