Lots of good advice here. Like Patriot says, you need to give this time. Hard to talk about it when there's lots of smoke that needs to clear...... Take your down time to reinforce your relationship and how much you care for here. No talk of smoking or bikes...... In time, discuss what perhaps caused the accident, your fault or the other party, help her understand why it happened. Well, you need to know too...... and in a couple of months or so, go take an MSF or Lee Parks course.... it will do you both good, shows faith, etc. But, give it time.

She married a biker and He married a smoker. Can we really expect to change those we love? Or should we accept them as they are?
Just like Jim Morrison from the "Doors". This man right here is a Freakin' Poet. You pick the one you love. You have to love the one you're with. No alterations allowed. Life is short. Anything other than being yourself is unacceptable. We are all going to meet our maker someday. The question is: How big is the smile on your face going to be? :)

First things first get over your injuries . Second ask your wife why she has not given up smoking ,listen to her do not lecture . Do not try and convince her of anything with facts ,women and emotions go together first , women regard fact after emotions .Addicts and their addiction are not swayed by facts or bribes ,bargains whatever they need to give up because they want to , you can the support her in every way she needs when she wants to . If you have young children she could be very worried about their future if you ride and get hurt , she has a right to be worried do not dene her that ,give her time and let her talk to you when it suits her about you riding ,this may talk 3 -6 months . If after that time she dose not raise the question then you raise it at a good time . Listen to her and say you will think about what she has said ,leave it a week and then talk again .You can do whatever you want but having a loved one hate very minute you are riding will guarantee to hurt her and your marriage

I wanted to give everyone an update.

She and I have worked it all out. I will be taking the experienced rider course once I've found a new bike, I'll also be getting all hi viz equipment this go around. She's going to be working on quitting smoking, although that will take some time. Thanks everyone for your responses, it made this possible. (Although, I can't believe she got over it so quickly!)

BTW, if anyone is interested, I was wearing a Shoei RF1100, Tourmaster Flex 2 jacket, and First Gear pants. All of it worked flawlessly, the jacket and pants are actually still serviceable (I didn't slide so there wasn't much damage to them) and my head injury was minor compared to what it could have been.

Sounds like a very good outcome.
To be possibly over-cautious, the armour in your riding suit may be compressed and so less protective in the next event that you hopefully won't be having.

Oh, I'm going to be getting new stuff, I mean, someone else is footing the bill so, why not? I will be keeping the old just as spares for whatever.

Glad to hear you're okay and that there's a reasonable compromise as to the decision. Taking a rider course is never a bad idea and we should probably all do it periodically.

You showed her your life insurance policies didn't ya?

Someone beet me to it but my answer would have been as follows.

1) increase the life insurance policy so that she will be taken care of.

2) Do everything necessary to make yourself more visible. Not just Hi ViZ but lights also. Bright LED's front and rear. Best riding equipment affordable just in case. Helmet jacket pants boots you know the drill.

Now if I could only do the same. (Hi Viz,

Most important thing in my opinion is to keep your head in the game at all times. Expect the unexpected. I almost got taken out coming back from TN last week. The guy in the high speed lane decided to take the exit last minute and never saw me. Fortunately I am still hear. He cut across all three lanes just barely making the exit. He missed my front tire by inches. Thats after swirving to avoid him and grabbing a fist full of brake and stomping on the pedal. Wasn' t my time I guess.

Glad your O.K.

Dave

I made sure my family knew the first thing I planned to do if I started to ride again was to repeat the last class I took and enroll for the Advanced Rider series of classes and then made sure they knew I had done it. Also replaced my damaged Hi-Viz gear with new and a bougth a new Hi-Viz helmet. Took some time because a few weeks after spending 7 weeks in a skilled nursing facility while the pelvis fractures and clavicle healed and I learned to walk again I dropped a large piece of wood on my left foot and broke a metatarsal. Another 7 weeks without riding and lots of time to think about riding again and to have some very calm conversations with my sisters and Mom and friends. Have been happily riding since last October now and I all get is the occasional "ride safely".

This. You can buy as much gear or life insurance or training as you want... but being ahead of the game, expecting the unexpected, anticipating what might happen next... THAT is the best life insurance policy possible. DAMHIK. :)

Buy more life insurance. My wife seems perfectly happy with me riding as long as there is lots of life insurance. And I'm pretty sure the thoughts go along the lines, when he's riding he's not hear bugging me, if he comes back I'll make him mow the lawn, if he doesn't come back, I'll have plenty of money to hire some cute guy to do it.

There's nothing in this world I'd give up riding for, except the love of a good woman. She's have to be damn worth it though.

I ride after a wreck in The Bad Lands in 2010. Totaled a 07 BMW K1200 LT. I will never stop riding as long as I can breath. Here is one of my pinned parts.

Wow, I just got back from Badlands, how did you hurt yourself?

Welcome to the club, LAF. Mine was in 2001. Your higher locations (C1+?) seem scarier than my C5, C6, C7.

Yes mine was C1 and C2. Atlas and Axis. I have lost a lot of side to side movement and is why I wear the biggest face shield area helmet I can find. I was told that without the helmet and gear I would have been a vegetable or dead, no two ways about it. I love life and riding and am very thankful to be here to chat. Life is good even with all the pain, it sure beat the alternative.

I bought the FJR without knowing what the DR would say about riding and it was a year in my carport being farkeled, as my 0 mile thread was about. No one, and I mean no one, will tell me not to ride except me. There are no deals or insurance requirements. I ride because I can.

I was going to put my two cents in on this topic but I think it is covered pretty good. I crashed my 09 FJR on March 30th but with no injury to me. I was lucky but the bike was toast. I have had my (new to me) 2010 FJR for about a week now and I'm starting to feel right again. I have a 90 year old father-in-law which makes my decision to return to riding an easy one. "Don"t get old" is the advice he used to give until his brain turned to mush from dementia. Quality of life is more important than quantity of life.

Hey, my company makes those screws. Just to let you know they cost anyware from $1200.00 to over 2K depending what type. That is the price just for one. You are one dam lucky guy just for your information. That is one of the worst area's to operate on.

Stay safe

Dave
