You know Wheatie, I may be able to get a huge group buy discount on the flip flops!
Don, if you've got that much clout...I will make do with a free mcy trip to europe for Louanne and me, paid for by you.

I'm not too proud to live off of someone else's hard earned income. :D

Well, feck all this. I'm going down to my local Hardly dealer today and trade my FJR for a Low Rider. Also trading Shoei for a patriotic do rag and have got my eye on some sexy flip flops with the Hardly logo on them. :yahoo:
Flip flops are dangerous. At least get the HD crocks!

Nice pic. I used to camp up there (Nick's Lake) every summer when I was growing up. Never been there in the winter. Do the black flies die down a bit when the snow starts flying?

Why do we preach to people about what we think they should wear? Why do we care??

Everyone on here is a big boy or girl, and is old enough to make a decision. Wear what you want. If you fall off, get serious road rash, and die a horrible death from infection or whatever, it has absolutely no effect on me.

Wear what you want.
It's basically the same deal with helmets, seatbelts etc. They've been mandated through influence by insurance lobbyists.

I personally don't care if anyone else (except for people I care about) wears a helmet or a seatbelt either. I wear them to protect myself, not other people. But now, they're required by law (inmost states, anyways).

It's unlikely that anyone else will get physically hurt if I don't wear a helmet or seatbelt.

I'm driving along in my car when suddenly 'ferriter makes a left turn directly in my path and there is *nothing* I can do to keep from hitting him. He was wearing shorts, flip-flops, a wife beater and no helmet. **SPLAT**. Now the 'ferrit is lying on the pavement dead. If he was wearing a helmet he probably would have survived. Man, I just killed someone. They didn't have to die. So, they were exercising their right to ride nearly naked but to me, that made me a murderer. Will his family proudly remember that it was his choice to take no precaution? What do his kids think? Let me go home to my family and tell them I'm a killer, I just snuffed someone. Man, if he only wore a helmet :dribble:

not sure I'm following you on this one - reread the highlighted parts of my original statement

I wasn't picking on you, I had been meaning to write 'the other side of the story' for a while. Indeed, in my scenario I wasn't physically hurt, but what you wrote did provide the trigger. I did want to point out that a rider not wearing fundamental gear like a helmet can have an impact on the life of someone else.

I suppose if they're not wearing a seat belt, they could also fly through the windshield and hurt someone else..

So, how long before seatbelts are required on motorcycles?

Riding in shorts is DUMB whether down your street or 2,000 miles away from home...end of story. :p
There are a lot more drivers that think riding a motorcycle is dumb...period. Riding with shorts is NOT dumb, idiotic, stupid etc. It merely adds to the element of risk we all assume when we get out of bed in the morning.
You're correct, it's not dumb. IT'S STUPID.
Stupid is as Stupid does.

Hey Don, when you order my flip flops, I want the ones with the thick, platform soles. AND I want sparkly ones.
I will do my very best to get you a pair of the sparkly ones Miss Jilly Beans, however when they came out our SkooterG pretty much bought out the entire inventory!

Camped at Nik's Lake a couple of times years back, yeah the blackies can suck in summer months. I make at least one summer trip up to Old Forge and several in the snowmobiling months. Homebase always seems to be Daikers in Eagle Bay. Great place and very friendly peeps, lots of good eateries in this area as well.

Not a cold weather fan but one huge difference in sled vs. bike riding... NO BUGS! Kinda nice not to have to clean them off after a ride.

I'll bet that Old Michael is behind this. Too busy hoarding his sparkles to be able to go to the Gathering Of The Clans. And using your son to buy them on his behalf so that nobody will know about it?

I'm changing my official residence address to Stockton. It's not so I can run for the US Senate from that district. It's so I'll NEVER be within five miles of home. So now I'm, like, 63% safer. Statistics don't lie!

Nope, sorry, you'll just have to stay in Sacramento.

As a lawyer I'm sure I have a skewed view of insurance companies, but IN MY OPINION they do in fact push legislation to keep medical costs down, but only so they can continue to maximize profits. If your state is a "no helmet" state (like my state), and tomorrow they enact a helmet law, will your policy rates go down? I guarantee you the answer is "No."

Cars are much safer now than they used to be. Why? The new ones crumple up like a wet paper bag in any accident. A minor "fender bender" now will cause $8,000 damage to a new Accord/Camry/etc. It does work, but the expense is incredible. Now combine all those "fender bender" repair costs to the overall medical expense for the occasional motorcycle wreck w/a rider w/gear vs. w/o gear... The "you not wearing gear makes MY insurance go up" argument IN MY OPINION doesn't fly.

Our insurance will always go up, no matter how much gear we all wear or not; helmet laws or not.

Hey SacMike...yer smarter than that...you can run for US Senator from any district in CA. You dufus...this isn't the House of Representives! Back to the research buddy...maybe starty with the US Constitution next time. :D

But then again, maybe riding in shorts is safer in Stockton than in Sacramento...

The medical costs of keeping someone alive and in good health for 40 years after a traumatic mcy accident will make that $8000 car repair bill look pretty puny in no time.

Most states, but definitely not all. Here in NH we have no mandatory helmets, except for anyone under 18 (rider or passenger). Same thing for seat belts.

I bet both my bike and car insurance is on the cheap side of national average.

Oh, and I do wear a seat belt in the car at all times, even when just making a short trip at low speed or when it's really hot out. I'm such a moron! :p
