Going to the Boone grandfather MT area and would like some road to ride. I am planing riding on the snake. Is the snake from Bristol to the store on 421? Thanks

Yes, I believe it is. 421 is indeed a fun road. Have a good time and enjoy yourself. We will be riding in the same area next week.

Ought to come hang in the Cruso area this weekend...big FJR camping meet. :D
wish I could make it out to Cruso. Wife's birthday Saturday - just won't work out.

Don't miss the stretch of US-221 that runs parallel to the Linville viaduct area of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was the original stretch of highway that connected the BRP for all those years while the battle over Grandfather Mountain raged on. Once the BRP was completed, that stretch of 221 became one of the most forgotten and totally unused stretches of road in the southeast.

Just hop on 221 South out of Blowing Rock and stay OFF the BRP.

Here's a quick map for you.

Be sure to look up occasionally to see the Linville bridges of the BRP above you.

If you're ever in the area during Fall, that stretch is an absolute tunnel of colors. Just be careful immediately after high winds or storms. The road can be full of debris.

Don't have any idea how you plan to route TO Boone, but I'd give Table Rock State Park in PickensSC a serious consideration for a detour. Some excellent riding that's more-or-less along your path.

Less than 10 mi. W. of Boone (U.S.421) -- Mast General/Country Store NC194 to Valle Crucis, Banner Elk, etc.

You're welcome. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. We ride around table rock and up 178 a good bit. We are making a weekend out of this ride and just looking for some good roads. I tried to look up the routes from last years EOM but they seem to be gone or I'm just blind. Thanks again

Hey, the FJ Rally starts today in Boone at the KOA and goes through Sunday or Monday. Info is at fjrally.com. Lots of great roads around Boone. Rt. 133 out of Shady Valley and the intersection with The Snake is a nice ride through the Cherokee Nat'l Forest up to Damascus. Then Rt. 58 is really good, too. The roads around Roan Mountain and Little Switzerland are good rides.

Quite a few of us FJ guys have added the FJR to the stable.

+1 that stretch of road is awesome!

When I hosted EOM in 2006, we centered the event in Boone. All of the ride maps are still online and available here. There's several good rides of various lengths.

A pic from 'back in the day' when that road was the only option:

If you're riding the snake on the weekend watch out of the TN Highway Patrol. They have a regular spot on a straight as you first exit the twisties headed for Shady Valley from Boone........don't ask how I know.

Thanks for the heads up. I sure don't need to talk to them.

As has been mentioned, US 221 is a nice ride. Also check out Highway 80 between BRP and US 70 through Pisgah Ntl forest near Lake Tahoma. Though we never intended to ride that road, it turned out to be a whole lotta fun. Well, the first few miles were fun - lots of tight twisties!

we (fj rally folks) were there all last week and weekend, luckily we saw no law enforcement. we were told THP presence is waaaaay down from past years, that now the only leo enforcement is a couple units in the town immediately before shady valley for accident response. i was in the area from tues to sat, put over 800 miles on, and saw probably 6 units the entire time, and never got the impression it was the nazi-like state shady valley and deals gap has been in prior years.
