From elsewhere:

It was... Rocky Rhoades (twisty roads on the forum). Not a lot of information about what happened. he was riding 3rd in a group of 3, so there were no witnesses. All the information that I have is there was a long slide mark (like he locked his brakes up) that ran straight off the the road on slight dog leg turn. I've ridden with Rocky for 7 years now, and he was the fastest, most in-control rider that I know personally. Some are saying "rider error", I say that's ********. On coming traffic in his lane, Deer or dog running across the road or mechanical failure I'll believe. I saw him (on his first track day ever) run off and leave 2 AMA pro riders. They just couldn't run him down. Most of his good friends are on the FJROwners forum...
Watch your sight lines folks.

Just learned of a fatality of an FJR rider over the weekend in Suches, GA on highway 180 leading up to Wolf Pen Gap. I do not know who it was. WPG is ALWAYS a F'd up road to ride over (too narrow, sand, gravel, cyclists, trucks, steep drop offs at shoulder, etc). Do note this wreck was well before all that BS.

"... As we were getting ready to leave a super motard, a Ducati left up SR 180 Wolk Pen Gap road. As our group followed and was passed by a rider on a nice black Yamaha FJR trying to catch the super motard and Ducati, flew by the group up the hill pasing on a double yellow line. The FJR run into trouble a few minutes later as he finished an up hill right sweeper that dropped away into a sharp downhill left hand chicane (by Miller Gap Rd). As our group rounded the corner, the scrape marks and skid marks on the highway and a windshield in the highway indicated that something was a miss. The downhill has a ravine on the right side of the road. The FJR was wrapped a round a tree and the rider was laying farther down the ravine. A couple of our folks went down to render first aid with CPR. The front of the helmet was cracked on the chin bar and the damage to his jaw and nose indicated that he landed hard. Likely broke his neck landing on a rock. A weak initial pulse disappeared and 15 minutes of CPR could not bring him back. We left the area after the rescue squad arrived. The rider had a good Aria helmet and a Aerostich, but they were not enough to protect him from a high speed trip through a bunch of trees and rocks. The rider went into a nasty corner way too hot. Slow down. Life is too short."

Sad news all around. First I have seen the additional information though about the rider's actions.

Here's a link to FJRiders forum with the rider's identity: Clicky

Now in FJR specific discussion with the same text.
Merged into one thread.

If somebody knows if he was a member here....what that member name was...drop me a PM.

My condolences to the family.

The corner there at 180 and 60 is where Two Wheels Only use to be.

I camped there a couple of times and it was the most fun, just outstanding. Also traveled on 180; a number of times as it was so close by. The description by Pilot is very accurate, Lots of sand and gravel and **** on the road, I'd guess from cars kicking it up cutting corners and such. And... there's definitely some tight twisties there. And yes! very narrow, some spots only 1 vehicle at a time iirc.

Sad to hear of a fellow FJR rider losing it there, it's a fun road but man you need to be very cautious and ready for anything.

RIP.
