Little story.

Last Sunday I stopped by the local Tim's, and one of the founding members of the Harley pot-bellied festival was shitting bricks and obviously upset. It seems he had bought synthetic oil, because only the best will do (at $19 per liter!), and the parts guy sold him 10w-30 instead of the specified 20w-50. Buddy had changed his oil himself and was SURE his bike would spontaneously combust should he even look at the starter button.

His other buddy was on the phone to the parts guy on the other end of the phone and REAMING him about selling his buddy bad oil, unrest on the west bank and his ancestory and just what the hell is going to do to make it up? Keep in mind, he called this guy AT HOME, ON A SUNDAY!

Not a word of a lie, the guy called his wife and had him bring the owners manual to him so he could look it up and see if it was at least SAFE to start his bike and bring it to the dealer.

FOR. *****. SAKES.

I told him I've been using $20 a GALLON Shell Rotella for the last 100,000 miles. Everything from 0w-50 on up. Engine still purrs like a kitten, original clutch, burns no oil. The only time I use synth is when I'm doing a LONG trip so I don't have to change the oil mid-trip.

"Give your damn head a shake" I said to him. All the rest of the card-carrying members of the Harley pot-bellied festival were all up in arms and filling his head full of horror stories about a guy they knew who didn't use the proper oil... Then the started in on me as I obviously don't know what the **** I'm talking about (combined, these guys ride 5000 miles a year) because I don't ride a bike produced by THE Motor Company.

Long story short, he rode the bike home, but he was going to change the oil/filter again tomorrow just to be safe.

Of course, you just know a caterpillar will fart in Portugal next month and his HD will misfire and it will be the oils fault. Leading to him selling the bike preemptively, causing him to re-mortgage the house to buy another, his wife will leave him, and his dog will disown him.

Shallow end of the gene pool right there.

Did he ride at least five miles to this establishment? By the time he got home all that bad oil should have leaked back out thus allowing him to refill with whatever he likes.

Ever wonder where those beer bellies come from? The name says it all. When the belly's full of beer, the head is full of suds. That must be it.

Country music at it's best!!!

Wow.....pure chance that I stumbled across this post. Good thing too because I now have time to return the 10 litres of Rotella T that I purchased tonight. I can only imagine what potential engine damage I would have caused if I had of used it for my next oil change. That was way to close for comfort....

This same silly assed thread is going on on the GL1800 forum. Just think about all the exploded engines out there.

However, it is not approved by BMW and is the cause (according to BMW) for most of their final drive failures.
Huh! I had no idea the final drive was lubed by the crankcase. Learn sumpfin new every day.
Dumb ***............ I always insist the crank be lubed before it hits me final anal drive..

OK, I give up. It seems that there really in no good oil, so I'm going to stop using it. Now my question is, should I drain out the stuff I have or just leave it and forget about it?

After spending 6 weeks in Europe with the jaw-dropping, mind bending sense of the history of Western Civilization, I come home to this.

All I can say is... I sure missed you guys!

P.S. Regarding the Goldwing board, I haven't checked it yet -- but I'm sure it's going on there, too. It never ends. The only thing more dangerous than Rotella oil in a motorcycle's crankcase is a [redacted] tire on the rear wheel.
