It seems that Cass is not the railroad that goes up the Cheat. It travels to Bald Knob at an elevation of 4842 feet. It also goes to two other stations. Indeed, there is a dinner ride on the Saturday of EOM, though. For more details click here
Also, there is the Durbin Greenbrier Valley Railroad that does indeed have trains that run up Cheat Mountain. They even do overnight excursions. For more info click here.

I urge anyone that might be interested to at least peruse these sights.
You were right about Cass to begin with. Bald Knob is one of several Cheat Mtn summits . The other Cheat train, the Cheat Mtn Salamander runs up Shavers Fork gorge that drains the east side of the Cheat Range. Local geography lesson closed :)

Wow, looks great! From the looks of those roads, I see no need to ever move EOM from that area :) Looking forward to a wonderful weekend at EOM, and may have to go for a weekend before EOM to get in all the good roads.

Just don't pick Rt. 250 between Wheeling & Rt. 50...it's a goat path
Rt. 20 is a much better road.

250 is nice but really in need of some paving.
I kinda' beg to differ on that one, Tom. Rte 250 was in pretty dang good shape. Are you talking the part of 250 between Huttonsville, WV & into VA? There was little gravel... a little but few & far between.

I've ridden a goodly amount of 20 & it is good... but not any better IMO. I guess that a lot of it has to do with perspective & what you're looking for.

Thompsonian, 250 is as usual... sweet.

Great pictures Jim!

Heidi, that section of 250 that you got the pics of looks great. I wish I could say the same for the section that I rode Friday, north of Rt. 50 it needs lots of help.

That's the section I was referring too, 250 east of 79 is great.

Rt. 20 to Rt. 50 is a much better choice for us Buckeye's when headed that way.

I’m ready for lunch in Monterey!

;)

Personally, I think that 250 west of Huttonsville bites... but east? That's some yummy twisties on good pavement.

Have you ridden 33 Tom? That is another yummy road.

Yup, lunch in Monterey is cool. I had eats at Highs on Monday afternoon... the same place that we all ate lunch 2 years ago. As I was parking the two bikes that I blew by earlier came cruising by. ****, it took them long enough. I had already stopped for pics & was parking for lunch when they finally came thru. They wouldn't even look at me. Do you think that it was because a woman blew by them in the twisties? ;)

Yes, Squid!

I love 33, in fact we just did some of 33 to Franklin & then Smoke Hole Rd on our way to Winchester on the 17th.

Ahhhhh, Smokehole Rd.... I luv me some Smokehole Rd.

Off topic, please keep me posted about your yearly trip, Heidi

PS... try 33 east of Franklin for a ways. Actually, I like 250 better... but 33 is different. Both are good roads.

Hello, calling EOM GPSmeister Haulin' Ashe...Hello...sounds like Rt 250 from Huttonsville to Monterey (the original route) might should be put back into the High Ground Wanton Promenade ride...in spite of your VAphobia! ...Hello...anybody out there?...Hello...

Good Lord, did he actually take this out? Jeff!!!!!!! What are you doing?????

I'd like to see 250 added in to CR 629 which looks like it turns into 678... & then take 39W into Marlinton & south on 219 back to Brier Inn.

Did High Ground Wanton Promenade take you back to 39 on 220?

I'm thinkin' that we need to scout 629/678 & extend 250 thru all of the good twisties if these roads are good to go.

Heidi, Jim, Creta and Gary,

Wow, I took my oldest daughter Sarah on her first Big Motorcycle ride this same weekend!! We went up to Petersburg, WV via 33 out of Harrisonburg, VA stopping in Franklin and Seneca Rocks. Sunday I took her down Smoke Hole road to 220, then down to Monterey, VA. We jumped down 39 through Goshen Pass and then back up again and got on 220 again headed to The Homestead for lunch. Stayed on 220 all the way to Winston -Salem, NC to go see Grand Ma and Grand Pa & Mom and little sister, she had a ball! Now isn't that a cowinky-dink?
