El Toro has also withdrawn.

Griff and I will be "Westward, Ho!" in a few hours. (More like "Northwestward, Ho!", but that seems a bit OCD.) Sounds like a party of four in Cullman.

Boy - for all of the beak flapping about smoke houses and pies and ****..... not one dam picture.

Come 'on guys - throw us a bone.

Home safely. Bid adieu to griff as I swept off onto GA 400 and he kept zooming up I-85 North for another 2 hours. The theme of the day for us? "Hud got us lost as ****." Not once, not twice, but three times in one day. "Hello? Guinness Book? How did I do?"

Even onto a road that was signed "ROAD IMPASSABLE for RVs, big trucks, and motorcycles." Well, we showed them the caliber of FJRForum riders.

.... said the guy who apparently can ride everywhere except central Alabama. Makes me wonder about outstanding arrest warrants and restraining orders. Patience, Grasshopper; I'm sure our ride reporter will be posting up soon.

Pushed on towards home. Good ride north out of Muscle Shoals. Rode across the Wilson Dam on the Tennessee river. Highway 13 is a good road but I kept the speed down because of the forest rats.

Looking for some decent roads home now on the maps.

I think I am in the "town" of Buffalo. Along I-40 and highway 13 central Tennesee about halfway between Memphis and Nashville. So if you have any recommendations of roads let me know.

ASAP cause Jim Beam and I watching a basketball game.

Oh yeah, we went to D&H and met everyone there and got hooked up with some swag, so anyone who bailed out is a loser in more ways than one!! JSNS.

Cough cough El Toro. Freaking too windy???

Hud made me say it.

Sounds like you all had a great time. I've hung out with Gerald three or four times over the years. He goes back to the old days when I was in the business too, so it's fun to commiserate with him. I don't think he's ever offered me any swag though. You guys must have inspired him to random acts of kindness.

I had a pretty nice couple of days too. I was surprised yesterday that in spite of the winds gusting to 35mph, that it wasn't too bad, so I ended up riding quite a bit, but in NEVER ENDING POINTLESS RECURRING Loops, or NEPRLs. I did not head west to the farm because of the expected wind, and I'm not sure how it would have been once you got off of the plateau. The plateau was OK for the most part.

My wife and I had a pretty nice afternoon and evening yesterday. I've only recently lured her into the photography hobby, and so we went on a photographic outing down the Calfkiller River Road from Monterey to Sparta ... How's that? Mexico to Greece in 30 miles. It really is quite a neat road, but the regular washouts every mile or so get old after the first four or five.

Today was overcast with the chance of rain ever present ... but the rain held off and I don't think it ever came. I rode some more and took care of some other business here in anticipation of a trip tomorrow.

The '09 FJR did not show any signs of that clutch stutter that I think has been resolved, so that was good.

In any event, I still have to get down to Barber for this year. Maybe in two weeks when Spring Break is underway. I wonder if Gerald would consider belated gifting of swag :). Probably would if I'd leave that $500 deposit.

You know, what I'd actually like to see a picture of, or at least hear about, is the All-Steak Restaurant in Beautiful Downtown Cullman. How did that turn out. As a guy who likes to eat, this was a bigger attraction for me than visiting with Gerald.

I have plenty of pictures of the food there. But I have not figured out how to post photos from the phone yet. Prob wouldn't work well given the lack of decent internet here.

The place was nice. The black eye pea dip was great. First time trying fried green tomatoes, and it was way better than I expected. The breading was awesome. Griff had some fish with his pecans. Hud and FJR Bandit had a hamburger steak. I had a small sirloin that was not better than homemade but I broke my own rule about having steak at a resturant. The cole slaw and tomatoe, onion, and cucumber salad sides were the best I recall having.

The place is classy. But Hud was wearing a suit. All of us had a jacket on, so we blended in as best as we could. Does AeroStich and riding jackets count? Our waiter Kaleb was great. He busted his butt the whole time. Made good suggestions and even brought Hud some unique sauce that wasn't part of the entree he ordered, but recommended it anyway.

The final comment from Hud was "I think I am stuffed full as a tick" summed up the evening well. That was after the Orange roll which are complimentary after the meal and freaking delicious.

Got home about 10 pm safe and sound. Had a good visit with Gerald and other folks at D&H followed by some great food at the restaurant. Thanks for putting this together Bandit, 750 miles today, boy I haven't done that in a while. The old bones ache

^^^^ You did ride a bunch today. Like 16 hours or so. Glad you and Hud made it home safe. Haven't heard from FJRBandit yet. He picked great yesterday at the smokehouse and today as well.

I have trouble with photo posting here too. I think the issue is that you can't actually post any pictures, but you have to instead post them somewhere else and then tie them to this site. I'm not interested in having my pictures hosted on someone elses server, so it kills the idea of posting here.

If I can drag and drop or directly upload photos, I'm happy to do it. But if I've got to get some account somewhere else and let them host my photos, that's too much effort. I see some guys have their own servers so that they can host their own photos and link them to this site. Again ... that's too much effort for me.

Above, from L to R Griff, Unclehud, Cav47 and FJRBandit

First, let me say, thanks to the three great guys in the photo above that made this memorable ride possible. For those that didn't make it you missed a great time and I hope you can work it into your schedule next time.

I also have to say Griff is an animal! He left upstate South Carolina this morning at 3:45 am EST and I just read that he safely returned home at 10:00 pm EST this evening after 750 total miles today. All four of the guys in the picture above are IBA certified but that 750 he laid down today I assure you was much tougher than most 1,000 mile days many of us did to earn our first IBA certificate. On top of that, as many of you already know, he's just a first class individual, as are both of the other two fellows in that photo with me.

My portion of the ride started out yesterday (Friday) around 1 pm from my house. I planned to head to Little River Canyon and find some dirt to put the V-strom in. It was a beautiful, cloudless 65 degrees. Although the wind was whipping at times the Strom performed flawlessly as usual. It's taking me a little time to get used to the Kenda Big Blocks I recently had installed. They're 50/50 dirt/street tires and something I'm just not used to on the pavement yet, but they saved my *** late yesterday as I'll explain later. My plan was to meet Cav47 in Monteagle, TN for the night, enjoy a down home country dinner at Jim Oliver's Smokehouse and then the two of us planned to meet Unclehud and Griff Saturday morning in Scottsboro, AL, ride to Cullman, AL visit D&H Cyles then have lunch at the famous All-Steak Restaurant. Everything went off like clockwork! Great ride, great peeps and great food. It's hard to beat that combination my friends.

On with the show....

Rolling up I-59 outside of Gadsden, AL

Then some pretty sights along the very sparsely traveled Lookout Mountain Parkway.

I made a stop at the most incredible furniture store in Dogtown, AL, of all places! My wife and I are getting ready to deck out a small get away apartment at our "farm" in Jemison, AL. So I need to find a few pieces to fit the bill. While this picture doesn't even begin to tell the story, Akins Furniture Store is a sight to behold. I'm not sure how many square feet the multiple buildings the store is comprised of adds up to but the place will blow your mind! To top it off, it is located in one of THE most remotes spots in all of the entire state Alabama. If you are ever in the Ft. Payne / Little River Canyon area I encourage you to stop in to simply check the place out. I think you'll be amazed!

IMG_2146.JPG

Then it was on to Little River Canyon National Preserve.

After an awesome ride up the gorgeous AL 176 that follows the rim of the Little River Canyon, with several scenic overlooks, I crossed AL 35 and went in search of the dirt. What I found was some beautiful houses situated along a picturesque creek that flows into the Little River not far from this site.

IMG_2168.JPG

Then on to the dirt. Did I mention I love the V-strom?? With the strom my motto is, the ride doesn't end when the pavement does.

It's one of the most enjoyable types of riding I do, getting out in the wilderness and just cruising around on these backwoods dirt roads. I find that the national forest roads are the ones I like best, usually fairly well maintained and always in remote locations. Little River Canyon was only recently designated a national preserve so I'm sure they're still fighting their way for proper funding. But one day this area will be a jewel in the park system. It's way too beautiful not to be!

The mud hole above was a fun crossing. But not long after that I hit some single track ruts that just about put me on my ***. Had I been on typical 80/20 V-strom tires, ie; Battlewings or Anakees I would have been in trouble. It was pushing 4:30 and there was no one else in the woods. I was out of cell range and had I gone down I would have had a tough time getting the big pig back on it's feet. But the Kenda's took a big bite and kept me upright. I'm a believer and they're cheap! I was a little too panicked to remember to take a picture. Apologies...

However, since I was able to continue on my way I got some other goodies for you!

I made my way on to Monteagle and not log after I arrived Cav47 came rolling in from Illinois. I doubted he had as wonderful of an afternoon ride as I had but I was glad he made it in safe. We chatted a few minutes and headed over to the Smokehouse next door to hit the buffet of Southerness! Cav was responsible for the ****ographic photos of our meal so I'll leave those up to him to share with you when he gets home tomorrow.
uhoh.gif
We sat an enjoyed our catfish, pulled pork, beef stew, cornbread, mash potatoes, turnip greens, bread pudding and FRIED PIE! All the while, there was live music in the next room with guys and their uprights pickin' and grinnin'.

We polished the wonderful day off with a nightcap of Jim Beam Maple. If you haven't had it before I think you'll find that it's somewhat akin to consuming a pancake covered in maple syrup - in liquid form. Actually, it's very tasty! One on the rocks set me in for the night.

Next up, on to D&H.

While we didn't get out pre-scheduled wake up call from the front desk, we still managed to get away from the hotel shortly after 7 am as planned. We headed to Sewanee, TN and passed through the campus of Sewanee University, "The University of the South". Trust me, there is some serious money on those grounds! If you have a liking for architecture I highly recommend you swing through there sometime. Especially if you want to see it, because my dumb *** forgot to shoot pics for you....

Then it was on to the Natural Bridge just outside of Sewanee.

We made our way back to TN 56 to start our trek in to Alabama. We were jumped by a couple of forest rats, but without incident, fortunately.

Then it was into the valley, now in Alabama on AL 117 headed into Stevenson, AL.

After a quick stop for fuel and a biscuit we crossed the Tennessee River via the old B. B. Comer Bridge just outside Scottsboro. As you see, it is in the process of being replaced with a couple of more modern structures. By the way, this is the area where Randy Owen of the country band Alabama is referring to in the song, "Tennessee River". He and the rest of his band were all from the Ft. Payne area, which is just over the ridgeline in the distance.

"This mountain King done left his throne

On the Tennessee River and His mountain home
But I'm going back, Leaving today
For my homeland so far away
Driving to Dixie, wasting no time
Back to the good life I left behind
Going down to the river with my fishing line

Climb back up the mountain by supper time"

IMG_2274.JPG

IMG_2275.JPG

After crossing the Tennessee we met our compadres, Griff and Unclehud at the Comer Bridge Boat Launch, which by the way was full of boat trailers. There were hundreds of people on the river fishing today!

IMG_2278.JPG

Then it was on to Guntersville via beautiful AL 67 that follows the banks of Guntersville Lake.

Did I mention there were hundreds of boats out today??

Then we arrived at the place that needs no introduction on the FJR Forum, D&H Cylces. See the write up above by Cav47. I couldn't say it any better. Jerold and Renae are just first class individuals! Jerold told us today that during the heyday of FJR sales they sold 138 units in a one year period. That is simply amazing considering the size of this relatively small dealership and its location in the little hamlet of Cullman, AL. It's all about service my friends! He also told us that they were ranked 40th last year out of over 1,100 Yamaha dealers.

The four of us with Jerold sporting our new swag - Jerold gave us all a very nice Yamaha cap with D&H Cycles embroidered on the back. SWEET!

IMG_2288.JPG

And for all of those that have talked with Jerold's sweet wife, Renae over the years, this one is for you.

IMG_2289.JPG

After a great visit with the fine folks at D&H we headed to our RTE destination, All-steak!

IMG_2291.JPG

Again, I'll have to leave the food **** up to Cav47. He was our official food **** photog. Also, see Cav's excellent review above on our fabulous meal at the All-Steak. It's just one of those places that you have to experience. For those that weren't able to make it, I'm sorry you missed out. But without a doubt, it was one great day of riding!

Afterwards, we all said our goodbyes and I slabbed my way back to Birmingham, while Cav continued his exploration of Alabama and Griff and Unclehud still had some rally photos to get. Thanks to the three of you for making it happen! I look forward to seeing all of you again in the near future.

Till then, adios my friends!

Awesome ride report. I did consider this trip, but other plans got in my way and I passed. I'm regretting that wholeheartedly.

I've camped at Desoto - it's a really nice place.

That entire area is gorgeous and it is not what one thinks about when he thinks about Alabama.

Glad you guys had a nice ride.

GREAT writeup, Bandit! .... and Little River Canyon is where griff and I found the "impassable by motorcycles" road -- maybe Cherokee County 275? Highly recommended route for a V-strom.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I wrote that last night after mid-night and made the literary sin of not bothering to proof read it before posting, so please pardon the obvious typos and misspellings. I've tried to go back and correct the ones that were so glaring. Also, I edited other portions and added some additional commentary. Might be worth a quick reread...

Uncle Hud, I think I know the exact road you are talking about. I almost took it Friday, but knew I didn't have time to go off on an exploration in that direction. This is the sign at the beginning of Dekalb Co. 148 that quickly turns into Cherokee Co. 275 at the county line not far from this spot. Was there actually a sign that read "impassable by motorcycles" on down further? From this point I continued northward along the canyon rim on AL 176.

IMG_2147.JPG

Thanks for the tip - I will definitely turn right next time!!!

Bandit - yep there was a sign earlier in our trip that also included motorcycles as being impassible ??? Maybe Hud can identify the location.

Yeah, griff was up at 0 dark thirty after he and his wife were playing cards at our house Friday night. That dude is an animal.

A nice kuala bear animal, but an animal nonetheless.
