So it never rains in Southern CA? I guess they were saving it up for today, to dump on 16,000 runners who showed up at the beach.

I completed my first ever 5K today, in the pouring rain. Not a big deal to some, but it meant a lot to me. When I began the Snail's Pace Running Academy in October, I thought I might die after running for one whole, consecutive minute. Today, I did the 3.1 mile course. :victory:

Big congratulations, if you please, for Barry (Barabus) and his wife Jean who completed the half marathon course. We all started the class together last Fall, and they have made tremendous progress. :clapping:

Getting into warm, dry clothes after the run is a sublime pleasure, usually only know to motorcyclists. It's ALMOST worth getting that wet, for the pleasure of not being cold and wet any more. Kinda sorta like banging your head on a brick wall. It sure feels good when you stop.

Congrats! As a veteran of many marathons, I sympathize with your plight of running in the rain and I hope the adverse conditions increased your sense of accomplishment! :fan_1:

Congrats on the run! That is a big accomplishment...any plans to do more?

Now I hope this hasnt been asked before but do Nike or NB rubber stick better in the rain or does Asics rule? What kinda mileage can I expect from each? hahahaha :)

After a big nap and a hot shower, I feel almost human again. Well, what can I say- last year neither Jill nor I could run a mile. We started running with Snail's Pace running academy three times a week. Jill, my wife (Jean) and I have made great improvements in our fitness that has translated into all other areas of our lives. The half marathon wasn't as important as the training and bonds we built in the months leading up to the event. In case some are curious the half marathon is 13.1 miles and it took us 4 months from being complete couch potatoes to train for it. If we can do it then anybody with a pulse and a little determination can do one.

All and all, I feel a big sense of accomplishment and want to do another in the Fall. Maybe Jill will get talked into that one too. Great job Jill, we are proud of you. It would have been too easy to stay in bed this morning. Congratulation on finishing your first running race.

Thanks Barry. May I clarify, before Odot or Scab reads this, that you wanted to stay in YOUR bed with YOUR wife, and I wanted to stay in MY bed. Just so that there is no confusion here. :)

Congratulations! I know from experience that completing your first milestone run, whatever the distance is a first class great feeling. Completion in miserable weather is especially commendable.

I remember running a 10K once in cold/wetconditions and being completely miserable when finishing. I had no idea a guy could almost bleed to death through his severely chafed nipples. Another reason for ATGATT (bandaids) Sorry for the visual image there. Veterans of road races will know what I'm sayin'

Keep building on your successes- you'll be finishing marathons in no time! As noted, the months of training is the hard part. Completing what you had previously thought was impossible is the big reward.

Keep on running.

Jill and Barry,

Congratulations !! What you've done isn't easy, as most who have been there will attest.

Running in the rain? Actually, it helps to cool you - and makes for a more efficient process. Aside from the squishy shoes, that is.

Again - KUDOS !!

what's next, eh?

Well, there is the Tour of Palm Springs- a 100 mile bicycle race for charity. I am doing that next weekend with OC Velos, my new bicycle club. Probably poor planning on my part since I am completely wiped out from the run. I don't know how people do the ironman type events- 1.5mile swim, 100mile ride and then a marathon. I could barely walk after the half marathon. I could not even bend over to pick up a coke from a cooler. One of the younger guys laughed at me/with me and Jean grabbed it for me. Too tired to bend over- all I could do was stand there. Kind of funny.

Fantastic!! Kudos to you for getting off the couch and adding years to your life. I'm a mountain/off road runner and there is nothing like finishing a run/race in adverse conditions... and soon those conditions begin to be part of the fun of running. Next time it is raining or snowing and you have a run planned you won't hesitate. Half marathons are my favorite distance, as it requires alot of training but not so much that you put the family second. After my marathon last Sept I realized that I would rather increase my speed/decrease my time in Half Marathons... Being sore is the reward for working hard!

Want to combine some excitement, just take a road trip on the feejer and run in new places. I may riding south to Moab area next-next weekend just to run for a day or two, and of course to stretch the Yammies legs as well! ALL my running gear fits into one side bag! In March/early May I will be shooting down to Newport to go running on the beach for a weekend then scooting home. Besta both worlds.

If you ever get out this way we have great rides and great running trails.

The only farkle I have on my '07 is a "26.2" sticker on the back fender...

Artist,

Where did you find your 26.2 sticker? I'd like to find a suitable sized one for my fender or top box. I figure it might give a little added cage protection from the few out there that know the significance of the number.

Thanks

BTDT.

So - how are you feeling today? Recovering?

Keep in mind, biking is a different muscle set than running - you might be surprised at how well you do.

I know you're dieting, but carb loading is usually a good idea - as long as your running/biking the next day.

Feeling like I am overtrained and like I have the flu. Still bad planning on my behalf. I rode 80 miles yesterday and today and now it is time to "taper". Rest and carbs- yes- that is my kind of training program. BTW, our running club gave us a round of clapping when we showed up last night. That was cool.

Thanks. I'm sure we'll be headed your way, en route to NAFO.

If you do make it to Newport, you have to get in touch. Huntington Beach is right next door. The running club that Barry and I belong actually runs along the beach path towards Newport.

Running on the beach in souther California; you guys are killin' me. I just got back from my lunch time run. Today in eastern MA its snowing, about 30 degrees and 1-2" of slush on the side of the road.

A character building day!

Now that's dedication! I'm headed to the beach tonight, to jog along the beach path as the sun sets. Temp should be in the mid to high fifties.

Probably shouldn't even tell you that I had to open the vents on my jacket, while riding home from work today :)
