RUST!!!

During my winter farklemania, I also pulled various components apart because, well, thats what I do all winter. Well, some maintainence too, but anyway....I noticed rust beginning to form in the tank well opening for the filler cap. I now think it's my tank bag causing it. Well, that and my wash routine. I would wash the bike (weekly, at least) at work, dry thouroughly, mount stuff back up, and head on home. Well the pad on my tank bag is soft, easily mouldable foam, designed, of course, to protect the finish on the tank. Well, it also effectively seals the cap area, preventing moisture in that area from evaporating. Curious, I pulled the bag this am after washing the bike late yesterday, and a ring of moisture was evident on the foam pad. From now on, bag off until the cap area is good and dry. No doubt riding in heavy rain, etc., would have the same effect-tank bag users beware.

Though I would think any bag could cause the problem were it left on after a wash/rain. They all use some kind of pad.

Wow, that is a lot. It sure is more than my semi-annual wash.

The only thing I do weekly is clean the bugs off and touch myself.

No problem with my Bagster set-up, but then, the tank bag has no foam, so I suppose there is some air flow going on.

Washing the bike at work, eh? Guberment employee perks... gotta lub 'em, eh?

I used to do most of my maintenance at work on my harley. I.E. slow day at work.....boss out for four hour lunch....me watching the phone....pull in the scoot....tear it apart, put it back together. Bring her outside. Of course, it was nice having access to everyones tools in the shop.

if the tank bag doesn't let the humidity out, it wouldn't let it in either.

True, but rain over a days ride has a way of finding it's way into places a wash wouldn't. The bag is being buffeted by the wind etc, so I don't know that that would be true.

To bring up another unlikely problem with little contribution to the topic, I have to ask this: If your tank bag seals the filler area, might you also experience the tank cave in problem caused by the orange breather nipple clogging?

It vents through that famous Hose of Many Threads, so not an issue.

This serves as notice that you have now used 1 (one) n00b credit. The rust is evident once one has removed the filler cap assembly, the rust is in the cap well, which is raw steel, unfinished, as in no paint . I just used some steel wool and brake clean after taping off the opening as best I could. The problem would be for those who don't remove the cap assembly for vent cleaning.

Seriously -- is there a way to get some coating in there? like X-tend or something?

It's raw I believe because any coating would likely dissolve, if anything would seal it it would have to be something like Kreem, the tank sealer.
