I am planning on removing the lid from one of my cases to send to Garauld for painting. I started drilling a couple of the rivets out and not having a great understanding of rivets ran into a problem. i used a bit just a little larger than the tube in the center of the rivet head. When the rivet didn't release I used a larger bit still without success. I became nervous that I was drilling into disaster. Could one on you rivet drilling experts give me some much needed advice?

Sorry, I can't help you with drilling rivets... :(

But, if all you want to do is remove the pannier lid? -- just pull the pins from the hinges. :)

Use a 5/32" dia bit and drill thru the rivet head. Don't drill into the lid. A little wiggling and they should come right off.
Thank you Gary. The lid is off. Only took a little tap with a screwdriver and a rubber hammer. Might need your helpful instructions to install the new rivets.

Have you ever done this? If yes tell me how

Thanks very much for the response.
Yes, several times.

Just bend the 'keeper' tab down at the end of the hinge-pin and remove the pin.

To assemble -- slide in the pin and bend the 'keeper' tab back.

You're welcome.
