I woke up this morning more conscious that it was a day off than why it was a day off. But by a happy and serendipitous coincidence I have been reminded dramatically and painfully what today is all about.
While surfing the forum this morning I clicked on your post
Any Native Americans here? under "Images." After reading your post I noticed and clicked on the links in your signature line. Although I was aware of your loss from your earlier posts, as a parent myself I felt once again heart-broken for your loss, and for the loss of these two young men. But I also felt tremendous pride as an American for the character and actions of these two United States Marines that day in Ramadi:
According to Major General John F. Kelly, “I spoke to several Iraqi police eyewitness and they all told the same story, but one more emotionally than the others. He said no sane man would have stood there directly in the path of a speeding truck firing their weapons—yet two did. His officers, some as close as ten feet initially from the Marines, fired and ran when it was obvious the truck could not be stopped—and they survived. The Marines stood their ground and stopped the truck before it detonated, and saved the lives of their buddies.”
Thanks to your link, I appreciate what today is all about--a time to remember and a time to say thank you. Thank you, Jordan and Cpl. Yale.
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

And while I am at it, let me take this opportunity to also honor my dad:
Erik A. Gude
US Naval Academy, Class of 1950
Veteran of the Korean War (USS Helena--also, the name of the woman he later married, aka "Mom")
Thanks, Dad. I miss you.
