Scraping the bottom of the barrel here, an 05 missing some pieces for $2, and while not said I'm sure it is a salvage. Any idea approximately how much body panels would cost? I'm guessing a grand (if I skip the side cases).

I'm not sure if there is any other damage either (no dents in the tank), and this would usually pique my interest when closer to a grand.

Anything in particular that should be checked? Like something non-replaceable or so costly that another bike would be cheaper.

I would think if it really is going for $2 then you have nothing to lose. Get it home, have a look and if it scares you sell it for parts. I'm sure you will be able to get your money back...................

The OP missed one silly little letter that changes things a bit. It is $2K FIRM.

Hmmm. I see the bent brake pedal now. This guy probably had the same idea, and then found something...

I wouldn't rule it out ... an '05 with 5000 miles!

You will need to do your homework, but IF the bike is basically straight, re-skinning it is worthwhile. The parts are not horribly expensive, and you could get many of the second-hand. Don't bother with the Yamaha cases, fit Givi.

I'd be quite excited if the frame and forks are straight, and you'd get it for less than 2k ... firm or not the guy wants it gone.

I'm considering it a quasi firm. He had it listed for $2500 while I was drooling over the 2013 that got away. It's still a long drive away...I have an email out so we'll see what info comes up.

I would be a little worried what that big chunk of aluminum is sitting on top the right side saddle bag. If the motor runs my guess is 1K tops.

That "no title" would scare me. If you decide to go for it, i have the rear rack you could have for shipping cost.

Probably an easy fix. I'd go for it. The Tupperware is available on ebay. However, with Yama cases and a professional paint job you will be right at the "What it's worth" level not too much better.

I think it would be worth about 6K in near perfect condition. It would take about 3200 to get it there I think. Ending up costing a total of 5200. Close enough to flip a coin.

Ask him for the VIN. Then go to the local police department and explain that you are interested in the bike and you just want to know the status of the title, clear, salvage, etc. If the police department won't help, then go the DMV.

The police department won't know anything about the status of the title. All they'll be able to do is tell you if it's stolen by the VIN. Depending on how/where it was sold, they may not even have a valid owner listed.

You already know it's salvaged, so I don't think you have to do a bunch of research. It was crashed, salvaged, and then auctioned. I would take a personAL look before I bought it. You really need to inspect for damage you may not be able to fix with reasonable cost.

For California, you have to call or go to the DMV with the VIN to check status (I did this earlier this year while I was shopping for trucks).

HotRodZilla, I have to disagree...A check of the VIN will give the status of the title, but it'll also reveal if there are back-registration fees due, if there is a lien on it, and most importantly, if it is stolen or not.

Contact your local CHP office with the VIN, explain the situation, and they'll check it. DMV will be able to provide SOME of the information, but who wants to wait in line there.

Well, another salvage came up. This one is an 03 done up in blue plastic. The bike looks like it's been ridden hard, like there was nothing to loose. Anyway, a couple bucks and change. Another day trip to take a look, or a few more days rationalizing what a few more bucks will buy me...

BTW, I'm just looking on craigslist in the bay area, CA. I'd post the link, but now when I search craigslist for FJR, I'm only getting one result, a piece of plastic. Something is broken with the CL search, or I don't know how to use it. It's acting like it's not showing me results that I've already seen.

Not with a salvage title it won't be. At least to 99% of folks out there.
