Love my FJR but gotta try and Fly the Wing !!

Going to rent a Wing from https://www.californiamotorcycleadventures.com/

Stay in San Fran for a couple days and head north along the coast...

Never been to the Pacific, so I'm extremely excited about this trip :yahoo: , but totally clueless - need guidance !!

I'm not really a huge planner and love to fly by the seat of my pants, suggestions for places to aim for would be a great help, lodging(cool B&B's), site seeing, twisty's, eateries (Love Seafood !) Maybe go as far as Portland over the coarse of the 10 days, who knows... I want to take in some great sites, but also want some chill time too....

TIA

Immediately north of SF, just as soon as you cross the Golden Gate Bridge, take 2nd exit which comes up very quickly, just past the vista point. Turn left and cross under the roadway, then go up the hill on Conzelman Road. Very shortly you will see a number of turnouts on your left which give you great photo ops.

From there you can backtrack to Highway 101, or you can fart around the area called the Marin Headlands. Nice riding, a lighthouse, old battery, beaches, a marine mammal rescue place.

Once you're back on 101, take the Hwy 1 / Mill Valley / Stinson Beach exit. That road goes for about a mile, then your GPS will tell you to turn left on Shoreline Highway. There's a gas station there. Be sure to fill up if you haven't recently, your gas opportunities are about to get very limited.

Decision time: Muir Woods or not? Muir woods is a redwood forest national park kinda place. Busy, but magical if you haven't been in a redwood grove. Follow your maps/gps to get there. I personally would skip the woods and enjoy the totally awesome twisty and ocean-view highway.

Whether or not you visit Muir Woods, you will end up at Stinson Beach. There's a market at the stop sign. Good place to buy a sangwich, walk 2 blocks to the beach, and eat. Or stick it in your tankbag for later.

Next place of note is Point Reyes Station. There's a cafe, a bakery, a market, and if you time it right, motorcyclists to visit with. Also the option to visit Pt. Reyes National Seashore. Miles of secluded roads, forests, a gigantic empty beach, and a lighthouse. Fun place to visit, but it will impede your forward motion as the only way back out is through Pt. Reyes Station.

Bodega Bay has a good restaurant right on the water. I can't remember the name of it but you can't miss it. Recommended.

Next motorcycle spot of note is the store at Stewarts Point. There is a road coming in from the right called Skaggs Springs Road. This is a well known local motorcycle road - loads of fun. It will take you all the way to Hwy 101, though, so don't take it unless that's where you want to go. You can just pay homage as you pass.

On a normal person pace, you're probably ready to sleep by the time you get to Mendocino. It's a cool hippie/yuppie/new age town, but mucho spendy. If you are on a budget you can head just a bit further north and sleep in Fort Bragg.

As you go further north, you may be interested in exploring the Lost Coast. The roads are lonely and bumpy, but the reward is that you'll get to ride where few ever do, and see the westernmost spot in California. Look for Mattole Road, Honeydew, Petrolia, and Ferndale.

And that's the Norcal coast according to me. Have fun! Let me know when you're in SF, maybe we can get together and I'll sign your Iron Butt witness forms!

I left out one very important item. When you go through Benbow, please, PLEASE do not forget to stop at the Benbow Inn. It is a very nice place. While you're there, please count the number of individual window panes visible from the front of the building. Once you have counted that number, be sure to send the information to forum member RenoJohn. He is very curious what the total is.

Thank you.

Additional comments below in red. I could go on for days!! ;)

Cambria is a great place to stay. Look to visit Nitt Witt Ridge and maybe stay at this B&B, Victoria's Last Resort.

From Cambria, come up the PCH and stay in Carmel or Monterey for the evening. It's less that 100 miles from Cambria to Monterey but you will most likely want to take all day as the views a breathtaking, lots of photo stops, and look for the waterfall at Julia Pfeiffer State Park, just south of Big Sur. Lunch at the Big Sur River Inn, sit out back in the big Adirondack chairs and dip your feet in the running stream out back. They also have a hotel there too - pricey but very nice.

In the Bay Area, there are a tone of fun roads in the mountains - 9, 35, 84, Alice's, Stage Rd., Pescadero Rd., and tons more!

NOTE: Conzelman Rd. is closed for construction. You can still take the same exit but go RT at the offramp down the hill toward Sausalito and turn right onto East Rd. for a different view of the bridge. There is also the south side of the bridge at Fort Point (do a search here as several have photos of both vantage points - also check WheatonFJR's thread on his and Airboss' trip out this way last May).

From there you can backtrack to Highway 101, or you can fart around the area called the Marin Headlands. Nice riding, a lighthouse, old battery, beaches, a marine mammal rescue place.

You can still get out to the Headlands but you'll have to take the tunnel off of Alexander Ave (the exit already mentioned) directly out to the beach... it is really beautiful out there.

Decision time: Muir Woods or not? Muir woods is a redwood forest national park kinda place. Busy, but magical if you haven't been in a redwood grove. Follow your maps/gps to get there. I personally would skip the woods and enjoy the totally awesome twisty and ocean-view highway.

Also, consider riding to the top of Mt. Tamalpais - great road and awesome view (as long as it's not foggy!).

My personal 2cents is to forego the lighthouse. It's a crapshoot if you will even be able to see the lighthouse because of the fog and the road out is fraught with high winds, rough road, and cow pies all over the place... very treacherous.

Bodega Bay has a good restaurant right on the water. I can't remember the name of it but you can't miss it. Recommended.

The Bodega Coast Inn is where we stayed for the Rolling Illinois Cluster Feck in May. Very nice place, ocean view rooms, etc.

It will take you all the way to Hwy 101, though, so don't take it unless that's where you want to go. You can just pay homage as you pass.

Or you can take Stewarts Point/Skaggs Spring inland, and then hit 128 out of Cloverdale back out to the coast.

On a normal person pace, you're probably ready to sleep by the time you get to Mendocino. It's a cool hippie/yuppie/new age town, but mucho spendy. If you are on a budget you can head just a bit further north and sleep in Fort Bragg.

And don't forget Avenue of the Giants! Once up in Fortuna, must do roads include 299, 36, 3, and 96.

And that's the Norcal coast according to me. Have fun! Let me know when you're in SF, maybe we can get together and I'll sign your Iron Butt witness forms!

I share this with you so that you can see it cyberly without having to loiter in the people's republic of Kawlifornia.

....you should really explore the real west and come to Nevada. We have a new and improved attraction. Once a pathetic shoe tree, now a very impressive shoe stump:

IMG-20110810-00119.jpg

'course different things bring different people to Kawlifornia and maybe that includes you Patrick. ..maybe it's that free love and public displays of affection that can be found in the bay area, For example these two who can't seem to keep their lips off of each other:

Hahhah Free Love.... I'm all for it.... 43 and yet to be married, raised my son for 17 yrs alone...

Now its time to have some fun on my own... :)

Man, just checking into things in San Fran, around the Fishermans Warf and I gotta say, looks like a cluster **** there - any suggestions for better (but cool) places to stay, that is not filled with drama and $300/night hotel with $40 parking ? Wasn't looking to drop a grand on the first couple nights before I head up NORT...

Maybe I should fly into San Jose - its closer to the Bike Rental place anyways.....

Thoughts....

fly into Vegas, Probably half the price, inexpensive rooms, hot chicks (vs *** guys) ......and if your really feel like going to CA it's the state over.

Or, just fly into Reno -better and easier access to the CA roads you want to do compared to SF or SJ ....plus you can take a spin through some of the Sieras on the way, Certainly you've heard of the Sierras?!??! Some of the best riding in this galaxy. ...beats the **** out of waiting in line to ride down Lombard Street -which is where the locals will point you for twisties. Good luck with that and the cab full of blue-haried tourists in front of you stopping every few feet.

SF Gay Area gets called that for reason, something else to think about..... just sayin' maybe that's what you're looking for, but if not why go there?

The Battle Born state is where you want to start your out-west adventure. Imagine coming out-west and starting your adventure in San-0-gay or that village known for the rice-a-roni commercials??? Dude, seriously your friends will be laughing at your for years -if they even admit to knowing you.

Yep, you really need to re-think about what your life is worth and how to make the most of it. Start in Reno, ride some kickass Sierra roads -you'll hit the north coast at the same time as if you started in San Jose and You'll have seen some great stuff along the way and probably have gotten laid ...uhh, and by a girl. That ain't happening if you fly into the Gay Area and battle congested tarmac as you eventually make your way up to the good stuff.

Let me know how I can help, I see this trip being really good, or the mistake of a lifetime.

San Jose is a smaller and generally less-congested airport. Lots of less expensive options to stay around here as well as great riding. B)
It all depends on what you want to do for your couple of days - be a tourist in San Francisco on foot, ride your bike on some killer local roads, or something in between. I wouldn't recommend hustling a giant Wing from place to place in SF, parking is completely impossible and traffic can suck unless you know your way around.

San Jose is closer to the primo riding areas that Tyler mentioned. It's at least a 30 minute ride to SF, plus you'll still have to pay for parking once you're in town. If flights are better to SFO, consider staying closer to the airport in one of the Peninsula towns. I recommend the Marriott Courtyard in San Bruno (Bayhill Ave). I used to work right near there and we had many people stay there on business. It's 5 mins from the airport, 15 mins from the city, and you can take BART into SF and leave the bike behind.

So many options!

that village known for the rice-a-roni commercials
That's a phallusy - the Rice a Roni factory is actually in fantabulous San Leandro, CA. True fact!

Don't be swayed by the Sierra sales pitch. It would be foolish to skip the CA coast in favor of crossing the lame-*** Sacramento/San Joaquin Valley. Stick with Plan A, and I will buy you a lunch at Alice's, then help you learn how fun a Gold Wing is on those roads.

Absolutely ridiculous! How many folks here in the Sierras go to the Bay Area in search of great roads ....Uhhh, and how many of you Kawlifornicators come up the Sierras to ride. We see it happen EVERY DAY.

Cross the Sacramento Valley ...yep, I agree there is one hour of bad stuff ...as you cross through RedBluff on hwy 36.

Patrick I'll put together a Reno to the north coast and parts of Oregon that cannot be touched by anyone. You're talking to the guy that knows every inch of northern CA and southern Oregon. And not just the coast. Ya want a teaser pic or two? Here they are ....and what you'll see if you follow the heterosexual path of RenoJohn

A typical road that I'll have you on as you make your way through the Sierras ...note: There are no rapid transit buses spewing diesel smoke on you as you'll find for hours of riding out of the Gay Area..

090507NorCA%20(46).JPG

Here is one tiny section of the heterosexual route that I'll put you on as you make your way west.

090507CallahanSomes.gif

Ahh, what a shame ....more of this ....and you haven't even got to the ocean yet:

090507NorCA%20(53).JPG

...and eventually I'll put you onto this RJ secret road that takes you through virgin old-growth redwood and down to the Pacific Ocean.

090507NorCA%20(149).JPG

Well maybe not totally virgin, ....they don't have old-growth redwood picnic tables like this in Wisconsin, I'll freakin' guarantee you that. Oh, and look at all those people squeezing you out in these pictures NOT ... ...and all those cars. **NOT**

Fly into SJ or SF you're flying into a megatropolis of like 8million people all pissed off that you're on the road with them as it'll cause them to be 1second late for their court-imposed "heterosexuals are people too" therapy session.

090507NorCA%20(151).JPG

...just a few teaser pics, and haven't even shown you the good or funky stuff yet.

should you have the wisdom to choose the better choice, your life will never be the same.

Patrick, it's time to step up, RJ and the Battle Born State Of Nevada are opening the door to your opportunity to do just that.

Nevada also has "The Loneliest Highway in America." For a reason. But if you fly into San Jose, boy, the ride over Mt. Hamilton up to the Lick Observatory is some darn fun riding for a warm-up before you head north. Bet Tyler would point you in the right direction.

So many great choices, though. Not much point spending too much time in S.F., though it would be worth a quick fly-by; it is awful scenic. Maybe a local can lead you through.

Don't worry Mike, I will not be swayed by the Nevada pitch - which I'm sure is a more then fine ride except one thing stands out pretty heavy in my mind.... Temps... https://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/monthly/graph/USNV0049 I hate the freakin heat !!!!

Agreed on the fly by on SFB.... I'm sure its a cool place to check out, perhaps another time - my wallet will be takin a hit already with this trip.....

John, you do make a good argument my friend, I've spent plenty of time in vegas and surrounding areas, so I gotta take a pass. And don't worry, i'll be bringin my own ***** - er I mean pillon.... :D No Gays for me sir

One of these days I'm gonna let RJ show me his super secret NorCal backroads. But I'm glad you're choosing to experience the full coastal journey starting at the Golden Gate. It's a great bike trip. The offer's still good for that ride on Skyline and lunch at Alices.

Sacramento Mike's mention of Mt. Hamilton got me thinking....One of these days I'm going to set up a Triple Summit ride - Mt Hamilton, Mt Diablo, Mt Tam, all in one day. It'll be a long day but tons of fun.

Count me in, but make sure it's after that Milwaukee phag has gone home

.....me offered the guy the holy grail to riding the west and he walks away. Probably doesn't even know the theme song from Laverne and Shirley, even here in Reno we know that song. He also thinks Reno is hot like vegas -Dude were at 5K feet and in the Sierras.

But no, you'll pass that up to fly into sea-level big city congestion ...and unless you take a jaunt up to Hamilton you won't hardly get above that. Might as well go to Florida. These folks got you snickered with extra nuts. OH and Ya, a Goldwing up Hamilton?, that'll be as fun as a belly-flop off the Golden Gate bridge. Sighhhhh, amazing.

I'll tell ya, my charity work is over, I'll keep all these fantastic roads to myself.

Don't take it too hard John, I'm sure there's plenty of tranny's in Reno that'll ride with ya bro!!

You can get that pole position you've been dreamin about :D

There are some great suggestions abut staying near the airport. By all means, if you plan to do "tourist things" in The City, use public transportation. A good portion can be accessed on foot, so wear good walking shoes. If you haven't visited San Francisco, I'd suggest taking a day and seeing some sights.

If you want to motorcycle tour the coastal range, I'd be heading to Alice's, especially since someone has offered to buy breakfast! Great roads up there and you could make a short trip South toward Santa Cruz to the Big Basin Redwoods.

Visiting the Presidio, under the South end of the Golden Gate would give you some stellar views of the bay and the bridge.

Stewart Point/Skaggs Springs Road could be an interesting side trip if you don't want to ride all the way to Hwy 101. It's probably 30 miles inland to Lake Sonoma where you could turn around and head back out. BUT...it is a winding narrow road, a Goldwing wouldn't be my first choice as a tool to use.

Hwy 1 and the views along the Pacific Coast are fantastic. If you're interested in history, about 20 miles North of Bodega Bay is Fort Ross, the southernmost outpost of the Russian trappers. Also, just below Bodega Bay, about 1 mile inland on the Bodega Hwy is the town of Bodega where Alfred Hitchcock filmed "The Birds". Another 4 miles inland is the Bohemian Hwy. that goes North to Occidental. Killer Italian food at the hotel.

I know, so much to do, so little time.

You can't lose by staying on Hwy 1 and following advice already given!
