Well, I never used the $389 48 Month YES extended warranty I bought in late August '04. I think the consumer experts are right -- don't buy extended warranties. This is my first motorcycle in 25 years so I was a bit risk averse. I didn't know how well they are designed and put together. My FJR has been in a shop one time -- replace the recalled TPS.

I should have known better when Jerold at D&H raised his eyebrows when I asked about YES. It was fairly obvious, he wouldn't buy it for his bike. Though he and Renaa were happy to make a few bucks from each YES sale.

I got the impression that the vast majority of his YES customers are FJR owners.

Yamaha needs to bring their warranty in line with the competition -- 3 years for the Concours 1400 and the Honda ST1300.

Maybe I learned enough about FJR maintenance from this forum to offset my YES expenditure. I've done all my maintenance for 39K miles except replace the TPS.

 
Ya! I shuld of asked to read a contract or done more research before buying the YES. Mine is alredy void for the type of use. The dealer said it would be coverd regardles of use when I asked, but the contract says differently

I think honda ST is 1 year unless you get the extended warranty alos. We went to the dealer less than 2 months ago with my brother in law, and I am pretty sure thats what they told him.

 
Well ask the owners about the ignition failures, cam chains and tensioners and the ticking that were covered by YES. I for one am glad that I had the YES for about $3000 worth of work covered no questions asked. I am sorry your bike didn't break down so you could use the YES. lol

 
Mine came with YES from the PO, and it has brought a lot of peace of mind. The only thing covered so far was a fairing pocket, but some have had more help. Overall, I'm sure it's a profit maker.

I don't buy service plans and extended warranties, except on the last fridge I bought, only because I knew I was going to move it in a couple of years. It's betting against the quality of the item you just researched and bought, thinking you bought a quality item. Seems stupid....

 
Honda ST is FOUR years in Canada.

My warranty paid for itself when I got my new headlight assembly.

I certainly do not recommend YES at the retail price. But for less tan $400 it is very inexpensive insurance - not certain how one uses an FJR in a manner that invalidates a warranty (track racing? Courrier delivery vehicle?) Commercial use is generally excluded from extended warranties.

Unfortunately I paid much more than the D&H price... But I'm still glad I have it. It only takes using it once to pay for it and I highly suspect that I will at sometime during my ownership. My biggest issue is still finding a dealer to trust with the repair, warranty or not.

After seeing what pony when through to fix his tranny, I'm glad I've got it. Mine is certainly not the smoothest shifting bike on the planet, though still better than my Dad's BMW ;) I suspect at some point it may need to be gone through.

honda st1300 warranty is same as goldwing, 3 years unlimited mileage and they do have an ext warranty you can purchase for beyond that. I bought the YES warrant at considerably more than 398 because in FL they cannot discount warranties. Anyway I am glad I bought it just because of peace of mind and for resale. It is possible to see a high mileage bike with a yes warranty and almost impossible to see one without. to each his own.

 
Got to use mine. cam chain tensioner, paid 384 and it handled the 1400 bill from Dreyer Motorsports. I'm in the black.

Let's see.....a broken sidebag at year 2 that would have cost about $450 replaced under YES and a broken gas cap at about $150. I got more than my $400 right there.

And a Gen 1 that didn't end up being a ticker, but would have been covered. YES for Gen 1's was a no-brainer. For Gen 2 the calculus is a little less obvious.

Yup, and that's one of two reasons I bought my FJR in Tennessee at the Honda Hoot. The other one was that the dealer was willing to give me a test ride. When I asked Orlando Yamaha, I thought the salesman's liver was going to fall out, he was laughing so hard. I still paid Florida sales tax because it was cheaper than Tennessee sales tax.

Now when I go to Orlando Yamaha, I ask the salesman "how's the FJR sales?" every single time - the shop manager loves it so much he gave me a discount on a tire mount&balance.

Yup. I have mounted red and blue led lights and am using it for funeral escorts and movie producton set security. Not really hard stuff for the bike. I actually ride it harder when just out for a ride. but it states clearly on the contract its voided for Police use. If it came down to it and if there is an ignition failure, or the computer went out, I could pull the mounted lights and take it in and hope for the best. After all I paid close to 1,000 for a 5 year warranty.

THAT, is a crock. What the legislation says is that they cannot charge MORE than the retail price. They can always discount. But why should they? They have a relatively captive market.

There ARE ways around that stupid legislation - just move the address of record (NOT the registration address, just Yamaha's idea of where your bike is) to some other state and then buy the YES. Then call Yamaha and change the address back to Florida - presto, $369 YES!!

I hope that the dealers / yamaha dont give you a hard time about that Lago. I think they meant that it should not be used as a police patrol vehicle owned by a public/government entity. Running down speeders and evaders is a lot different than escorting.

Thanks, I hope so. I would be very happy If I will never have the need for the warranty, but I am staying optamistic, If anything went wrong, the YES will make good situation.

 
I put 20,000 miles a year on my bikes, so I figured the YES was cheap insurance. I normally don't buy extended warranties either.

 
I agree with Iggy. On my Gen I 04, I had a couple of starter failures covered under YES. When I upgraded to the 08, I didn't bother with it. I had also bought YES on my YFZ450, and I did have a water pump failure on it, but I don't remember if that fell within the factory warranty period or not. So far, I still figure I'm ahead on those.
