Say No to YES

Well, I never used the $389 48 Month YES extended warranty I bought in late August '04. I think the consumer experts are right -- don't buy extended warranties. This is my first motorcycle in 25 years so I was a bit risk averse. I didn't know how well they are designed and put together. My FJR has been in a shop one time -- replace the recalled TPS.
I should have known better when Jerold at D&H raised his eyebrows when I asked about YES. It was fairly obvious, he wouldn't buy it for his bike. Though he and Renaa were happy to make a few bucks from each YES sale.

I got the impression that the vast majority of his YES customers are FJR owners.

Yamaha needs to bring their warranty in line with the competition -- 3 years for the Concours 1400 and the Honda ST1300.

Maybe I learned enough about FJR maintenance from this forum to offset my YES expenditure. I've done all my maintenance for 39K miles except replace the TPS.
You've done "all" your maintenance yourself? Did you ever put new tires on yourself????

If you do all your own maintenance without taking your bike in for dealer checks and such will the yes still cover? I was told by the dealer I bought my roadstar from that they would take care of it but if your get the yes from someone else what then?

Yup. I have mounted red and blue led lights and am using it for funeral escorts and movie producton set security. Not really hard stuff for the bike. I actually ride it harder when just out for a ride. but it states clearly on the contract its voided for Police use. If it came down to it and if there is an ignition failure, or the computer went out, I could pull the mounted lights and take it in and hope for the best. After all I paid close to 1,000 for a 5 year warranty.
Ok Lago...Maybe I am just a little confused. I initially thought you were a firefighter, and then I thought you were a cop. I saw the lights you put on your Feejr a while back, and read you were doing funeral escorts on the side or something. Anyway...I don't know if the funeral escort thing actually counts as "police use." It's just lights and some speed every now and then. Police bikes take way more abuse just due to the type of driving done on them. If I had an issue, I would take those lights off and take it in.

You are allowed by law under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty act to have anyone, including yourself perform maintenance without impacting on the warranty . . . so long as it is done properly.

Many of us do it all the time. I got tired of shops trashing my wheels and breaking my SmarTire sensors, so I bought some tire-changing equipment.

There's a group buy on right now on the No-Mar unit!
Great. I guess you have heard the phrase that motorcycling is quickly becoming a rich man's activity. I can contest to that! I just spend $418 for a new set of Michiliens installed for my FJR. I do most of my own maintainence. But I cannot do the big stuff like valve adjustment, etc. If you can afford it, more power to ya!

I say YES to YES and so did my dealer. Here's the story. Three years ago I buy a v-star 1100 from my local dealer and I pay $375 for my 4 year YES contract. This year I go to another dealer to trade in my v-star for my new 08 FJR. We're negotiating the trade in and he asks "do you have the extended warranty on the v-star. I tell him YES I have the YES, but he looks it up and says Yamaha says NO you don't have YES. So I show him my paper work from the v-star sale and clearly shows I paid for the YES. So YES I better have the YES. So I got no extra money on the trade in and drive off on my new FJR and head staight for the dealer that sold me the v-star.

So I go in to talk to my salesman and first thing he says is "You ready to trade in your v-star on a new bike". No thanks I got a shiney new black FJR out there in the parking lot. But we do need to discuss something the is very concerning. He looks up the v-star info on his computer and low and behold there is no YES that I paid for. So I tell him he's got two options that work for me. He can either give me back my $375 I paid or just pay for the YES on my new FJR. I guess the third option would be to get some laywers involved with regards to something called FRAUD.

So my dealer said YES to the YES!!

Let me see . . . I put 20k miles per year on my bike so my "Yes" purchase for approx. $400.00 gave me a 100,000 mile warranty. Not bad. I have had the tick fix, cam chain and tensioner replaced along with a few minor odds and ends. Your pool of money to the "yes" fund helped pay for my repairs.

For this I say -- THANK YOU! :bike:

I'm more geek than gearhead - and this is my first bike in 9 years (first NEW bike ever!). Got the YES - and I hope it's the biggest waste of money I've ever spent...

I HATE taking any vehicle to "the shop." I bought the bike to ride it - and I got mine end of July and only have 2,000 on it... I just wish I had more time to ride!

I've never bought and extended warranty plan for anything until I bought my FJR - I did so for two reasons 1) my FJR is the first new bike I've ever bought and the maintenance and repairs are expensive - granted YES does not cover maintenance, but the cost of repairs factored into my decision. 2) When I found out I could buy it from D&H Cycles and the exceptionally low proce they charge it seemed to be a no brainer for me.

Well, I've bought extended warranties for the last 3 bikes I've had. The extra cost has paid off on itself every time. 2002 Honda Magna, 2003 Honda VTX1800C, and now this FJR. Also bought PitPass for the FJR and I feel it will also pay for itself. These things cost way too much to have a shop work on them. Besides even if you do your own work if a major componet goes out on 1 of them the price of the part will usually cost more than the YES contract. Hopefully I'll never need it but to me it seems like a cheap insurance policy. Hell, you pay more than that for your insurance to ride it, and for just a year. 4 years is cheap.

I put 20,000 miles a year on my bikes, so I figured the YES was cheap insurance. I normally don't buy extended warranties either.
+1

You hit the nail on the head. It's insurance! If you get to use it, it's great but the majority of people never do otherwise the price would rise accordingly. All extended warranty programs are designed to make money for the manufacturer, it's part of their business model!

I switched to Progressive and rather than buy new shoes or a tricked out name tag, I bought YES.

I also bought an extended warranty on my digital camera which my wife dropped at Kings Island and got a new one. I also purchased one for my Rebel XT as these are relatively cheap compared to the total cost of the items.

The cost of the FJR is based on some formula at Yamaha that incorporates true production costs, warranty costs. lawsuit costs etc. Why are airplane parts so expensive? The liability makes them so.

So, for the FJR it costs about $12,000 with a 1 year warranty. Seems motorcycle people like to buy only the parts that they think they will use and then add to that. By offering the FRJ with a 1 year warranty the company can sell if for less as their liability is less.

Honda ST ABS MSRP is $15,599

Yahama FJR MSRP is $13,899

Kawasaki Concours 14 MSRP is $12,899 - $13,799

So for $2,000 more for the Honda and 3 years of warranty adding YES to the purchase of the FJR is a bargain.

ABS appears to be about $1,000 looking at the Kawasaki. Is $1,000 in the price of the FJR for ABS worth the price? Some people may think sure I like having ABS but never use them. Did they waste $1,000?

Bottom line is that the $400 for the YES is probably cheap insurance. Will everyone need the YES protection? No

Does the company make money selling YES? Absolutely otherwise YES would cost more.

Do you need to buy YES? No

YES was such a small amount to pay compared to the price of the bike and the discount that I got it was not a hard decision to add it to the purchase. Also, the dealer did not talk to me about YES but I learned about it on this forum and told him what I would pay based on what I read here.

Power to the people and the written word. Maybe that should be the motto for this forum as I think the discussions on this forum influence real decisions made every day.

Purchaced YES the day I purchaced my 06AE in West Palm Beach, FL for $ 600.00. 1 month after the 1 year mark, my ignition switch died and 1 month after that my windshield motor died. Both covered by YES. I was one happy camper when both times the bill was $ 0.00.
