is this a scenic route, a sprited/sporty route, a technical route, or a mix of the above? assuming there will be some sporty portions, i'd like to meet up. i won't be able to do an overnite thing, so assuming kickstands up at 9a in athens, i'd have to leave cinti by 6a, and i'd just break off from you guys around 6p wherever we are on the route at that point. so mark me down as a maybe, and i'll try to pay attention to this thread for more details. i'm not a hooligan, but i do prefer riding faster in the corners than the straights; i've heard the roads in s/eastern ohio are pretty good for that. ( :
This is SE Ohio...so we'll be enjoying the curves...this route IS mostly curves. :yahoo: Again, we will be splitting up the group into smaller flights of 4-6 riders to avoid the long parade effect.

Yes, we will be wicking it up some...but everybody should ride this ride with the appropriate level of safety...as if you were riding this ride by yourself all alone with no cell-phone. This is not a track day, these are public roads, you are riding with people you have not ridden before, etc.

We will have fun...everybody rides their OWN pace that they are comfortable with. Let me repeat...everybody rides their OWN pace that they are comfortable with.

I will have a safety nazi talk beforehand to lay down the ground rules regarding following distance, behaviour, etc.

This group ride is only a success if everybody has a fun ride :yahoo: AND there are no getoffs. So let's each take personal responsibility to make that happen. I'm no saint...I can be as squidly as the next at times, so the safety talk is for me as well as everyone else out there that day.

If you still want to come dean, we'd be glad to have you. :clapping:

Sure. I'm in. Haven't been on a group ride for a wwhile...

I'll put you down Pappy...

okay, sounds good. no need to worry about me, i'm usually one of the guys giving the safety speech at the fj rallies; i ride in the fast group, but am usually the one that goes back to look for someone if we haven't seen them for a few moments (depending), aka "the mother hen". if you'd like references i know pierre's been to an fj rally, i think there may be one or two fj'ers on the list that might have been, just so you don't have to worry about me showing up and doing wheelies in the straights while cutting off corners in the curves trying to keep up. we were having fj rallies and group rides before the fjr existed; and have photo documentation of one of the first, if not the first, fjr's in the country a year before they were available, in tellico plains. thx,

Thanks dean for your post. Glad to have your experience along. I may call on it later.

BTW, my response to your post (including all the safe riding stuff) was directed not neccessarily at you but at everyone attending this little ride. I hope you understand. I'm sure you do.

Damn....I thought that I would get to be the slow " Mother Hen "....oh well. I always plan on being the back of the pack rider since that is usually where I feel most comfortable.

Another thing to consider, is that in some of the area we will be riding in, ther will be no cell signal. If there is a signal, it's very weak. Yet another reason to bring the level of speed to your own riding ability.

Like has been said before...we will try to stay in smaller flights so it will be most enjoyable for all. Where you are in your smaller flight will still be your call. However, as it looks like plenty of people are coming are coming to this little ride, I will need to pick some locals with skilz who have ridden some of these roads, and have lead rides before to lead or be tail-end-charlie/Mother Hen as we break up into smaller groups.

I have ridden most of these roads last year, but am not a local...just an out-of-state flatlander that loves to come here for these roads atleast once a year. Therefore, since I don't have the skilz some of you locals have, I will be leading one of the "slower" groups. Please understand, BY NO MEANS does "slower" mean boring....all groups will have a FUN pace. :yahoo: I've ridden with griff and a few others here last year and I thought we had loads of fun! :yahoo:

We will be trying to match skill sets as much as possible for the safety of everybody involved...

This ain't gonna be no boring poke along...that's fer d#mn sure!

i'd take that as a compliment. usually in the rides i'm involved with, the last rider has always been a very responsible, mature rider, and usually a better rider. we don't need an inexperienced rider as last rider, nor do we need one who feels the need to thump his chest. back of the pack riders are there so you don't need to keep an eye on them. i will usually stay in the back for a while, then give a signal to one of the other riders i'm familiar with, asking if it's okay if i move along. sometimes you just don't have your groove and it's just better for me to hang back until things "settle in".

[sometimes you just don't have your groove and it's just better for me to hang back until things "settle in".

VERY GOOD POINT!!!

There will DEFINETLY be some roads on the route that Wheatie has planned that will need your full, undivided attention. There are some very technical spots, but are an all-out BLAST when you are in the right mindset for them.

I *might* be able to fanagle another riding buddy here ( he's got a 929RR ) to come along as well as my uncle on a Connie. We'll see the closer times comes, but the are both well versed in these roads and would make excellant captains.

if this has been mentioned before, my apologies, but if i may suggest, either getting emergency medical information from from cyclegadgets.com

FREE emergency medical helmet carrier form

or a form carried in your jacket/suit pocket. there's one kept in a database/files section of another group i belong to, i've saved it as a word document, but for whatever reason can't c&p it in here, pehaps because it has fill-in-the-blanks that you tab thru. if someone wants one let me know, or if there's someplace to post it i can do that, too. i'd post a link to that forum, but you have to sign in to yahoo and all that jazz.

Thanks thompsonian for the offer...I'll let you know. When I get an idea how many are coming I will get back to people as far as helping out.

Thanks for the link dean...definitely good info.

Just a quick note regarding size of this gathering...as of this post we have 14 committed and 7 possible for a total of 21 riders possible. I don't want to put a damper on invites...but I also don't want a circus/clusterf#ck on those backroads either.

Therefore, if an FJR rider (who hasn't signed up yet) wants to come...by all means come -this ride is for FJR riders...we welcome you with open arms. However, I would discourage people from rounding up all their non-FJR riding friends to "come on down" unless you have already done so.

I am not against any other brands riding with us at all...if you don't happen to ride an FJR presently and have signed up...-I repeat- you are most welcome. I just want to keep this little ride small enough that the FJR riders present will have a fun time...after all this Forum IS dedicated to the FJR rider.

I hope I haven't miffed anybody...if I have I apologize.

:lol2: :lol2:

No fancy acronyms for this ride...show up and ride...kick back afterwards with a beer/pop or two.

Yeah, and we haven't had any winey/gash crying yet about no GPS routing yet.(HINT - there is none, nor will there be...if ya can't figger it out from the posted ride map...sorry :p ) I will have old-fashioned turn direction sheets for yer tankbags.

Nah....not to worry Tom. If the gathering becomes too large, I'll just move the starting point to the Horseshoe Stadium at OSU. :) That oughta winnow it down a bit...

Also...a reminder for those still reading...raindate is the following weekend April 26th. (I'm not riding 500 miles to ride in the rain if I can help it)

It's funny that you mention the Shoe, because that's where I will be on the 19th.

I'm selfishly hoping they call for rain the entire weekend. B)

As I was looking over who all has expressed interest in this ride, as of this post we have riders coming from 7 states: OH, WV, IL, NY, IN, MN, & PA... and 1 from Canada (Ottawa). Of course the Ohio riders dominate the bunch (13) but we might also have a crazy Minnesotan joining the group. :clapping:

Can anybody tell me what you OH riders have done to the Michigan riders? :clapping: Seems they don't like the hilly riding down here...not a single MI rider has expressed interest.
