Planning to do the North Cascade Hwy in mid August and then skirt around Seattle to Gig Harbor and on to the Olympic Peninsula. Can you give a general weather expectation for the Peninsula in mid Aug? I realize this is a rain forest and if it is generally rainy in August we may divert or trip to central B.C. instead. Thanks.

/not wanting to hijack this thread/

Aug is generally dry. However -

Forks gets 10 feet of rain a yr on average. Yes, feet.

The PNW has had a very weird weather yr so far, way too much snow early in the yr, and now a long stretch of dry sunny days.

I have ridden around the Peninsula twice in the last 5 yrs. In early July, we had one hr of rain 5 days. The second trip was mid Aug and it rained every other day.

Dont miss Hurricane Ridge, Cape Flattery, the beach at La Push, and the Valley of the Giants @ Lake Quinault.

Just take your rain gear and go.

Thanks for the info Steve.

Bring some walking shoes or light hiking boots for the trail from the parking lot at Cape Flattery. I did that in my AlpineStars a few years ago and it was interesting making my way over the trace laced with tree roots. Also interesting were all the signs on trees along the trail advising of the presence of mountain lions in the area and a caution to keep pets and small children close. Fantastic view from the viewing platform at the end of the trail, well worth the hike.
