I think you got your torque wrench confused as to which setting it should be on...between the clutch rebuild and this.

I say you blame the torque wrench; like golfers blame their clubs.

Lets see.. no washer, too tight, extreme heat in AZ, no clue.

BTW - I think the torque on those is 150Ft. Lbs. I hope you didn't over torque it. :p

While that really does look like a stress fracture from the bolt being too tight, I bet it's not. My guess is you hit a bird or stone that just happened to find a weak spot in the molded panel. Likely a defect there from day it was made.
Upon first glance at the 2nd picture, I'd have to agree:

untitled.jpg

If you look carefully, the embossed "shoulder" that the panhead screws down on looks like it's been pushed rearwards in respect to the position of the screw head, like something hard or heavy smacked the leading edge, shoved it backwards, cracked the screw hole and everything went downhill from there.

3 possabilities

1. tightened by lou ferigno

2. hit by meteor (u do live in a area 51 kinda place)

3. fkin gremlins are back

I'm thinking the aluminum sub frame holding up them heavy-assed Soltek lights has broken, placing excessive load on the fastener and plastic shoulder/boss. Playing flipper with heavy mass (lights) on a sub frame not designed to carry the load = possible problems? Just wondering.

 I'm just sayin, I remember knocking the rear view mirror off my dads truck when I was a kid. And instead of telling him I glued it back on using model glue so if it came off again he would think he did it. Worked like a charm! That really looks more like an impact then stress fractures.

I found a similar crack on mine on the upper panel on the left side. the cracks radiate all around the fastener and that panel has never been off.

Looks like a classic stress fracture. All it takes is the right jolt to get these failures moving. Bad alignment, overtightening, etc. can cause the condition that just waits for the right kick.

Since I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, I feel qualified to comment on situation.
I think, that since the fractures are radiating from the exact point of the fastener, and, you're pretty sure you didn't over-tighten that fastener, there had to be some kind of impact on that fastener that began the fracture process...maybe via hairline, almost invisible, cracks. Riding vibrations and/or temperature changes just caused the fractures to propagate until the failure occurred.

Jus' sayin'
Impact?......On "Flipper"?....How many times???

Say it ain't so!

D'ya think there's a mini-consensus out there in FJR cyberspace?

OR...do some of these people know youo and the way you treat your FJR!?!? :p

Easily said because he's with BeemerdonS, driving to rescue Art.

I'm thinkin of all them beers you had people to buy ya like I saw at NAFO.

Then I think rode Hard and put away wet.

Then I think Skoot is thinkin more beers for poor Skoot.

Brazos, I REALLY like your avatar :)

What were we talking about? Oh yeah, voting on the perfect hit from a rock or bird at the precise spot of the bolt that the man didn't feel or hear (plausible given the bleating of his sheep), or he had one too many and tightened the bolt an extra half turn.... hmmmm.

I vote his big Adam's apple hit it while he was looking at the bike one day. ;)

Brazos, I think my avatar has the hots for your avatar.

Looks like brake fluid dripped on that area..? That happened to the top panel of my 04 when it leaked onto it from the clutch

. It took a couple of days for it to erode the plastic and it started to crack and fall apart like that

.

FJR fairings are only rated for 114.7° F, you didn't go over that did you?

My guess is this is just the start, pretty soon you will be riding a naked FJR.
