Couple of things:

Maybe the point of cover restraint (the bolt location) is in contention with another fixed point, say several inches away. This may only be a problem though, when expanded or contracted (from the heat and cold). I work in a steel mill and because of the huge ambient temperature extremes these types of problems are frequently found, especially when two dissimilar materials or "grain direction" (with different expansion rates) are used together and there is no allowance for this variability.

On my bike's plastic covers, many of the restraining bolt do not have a washer under them. I could never figure out why some have them and some do not. Is there supposed to be a washer for every one? I am the original owner via PDP so I don't believe anyone else has had the opportunity to lose any, except originally at the dealer when new.

My God, maybe your right for once in your pathetic excuse of a life. First she tries to kill me when heading to the Utah1088 by ejecting both front left side caliper bolts leaving me with a truly 'floating caliper', and now this!
Riiiiiiiiiight....

Those two left caliper bolts just decided among themselves that they will lose their torque and depart the bike on their own accord.....

Are we sure these caliper bolts didn't have a little "assistance" from your amazing mechanical abilities, huh, Huh, HUH?!!!

Mine has them -- and, there's supposed to be one under that screw (at least on mine). I un-crated and assembled mine, myself -- so, I'm pretty sure what's supposed to be there and where it goes. :)

The part # for the washer for the screw in question (SkooterG's incident) in "90202-05180-00 WASHER, PLATE ". There are about 15 translucent washers (maybe more?, when considering the whole bike...) in a couple different sizes.

They can be easy to lose, tho....

The whole issue's moot, now (in SkooterG's case) -- we're beyond that....

My 2005 had two of the upperbolt holes of the lower panel crack like that. Aerostitch has a plastex repair kit for that kind of plastic p/n 4576-4577. It's held for close to a year. the kit is supposed to reattach tabs that break off or mold one to replace the tab. I will try that on my son's 2004 that's missing a tab for the trianglar piece below the radiator. the failure I think was a disk lock that wasn't removed (really Dumb)and the bike fell on that side PDQ. It also isn't real pretty and will look fine when and if it gets repainted, it does look better than Duct tape.

Did ya clean it with somethin before hand? I ask because I cleaned dukes lexan shield with some orange cleaner, I went in the house for 20 mins. When I came out there were cracks around all the bolts come'n through the shield.
I've seen PBlaster (rust penetrate) do nasty things to plastic like that. I do not know why you would be using a product like that however.

So, a couple days ago I go into the garage and walk up to my dirty ol whore, aka Flipper - my FJR, and I see this laying on the ground in front of it:

:(
My guess is it wanted a up close and personal look at that BEAUTIFULLY finished garage floor coating. Just my .02 worth.
