If you can afford it I'd try and get a 2nd Gen (2006 and up) a little more refined and less issues overall.
Because there are 7 listed issues for Gen 2 bikes and 5 for Gen 1 bikes here. Of the Gen 2 issues I believe 2 were formal recalls and no formal recalls for the Gen 1.

More refined yes, but MORE overall issues for Gen 2 bikes in my experience on the forum.
Ok I'll see your MORE overall issues and raise you ONE "refined".

I have gone through and read as much as I could on these bikes from this site and others. Ai try to be an informed consumer. I also given the chance tend to choose low mileage bikes over the date it was made...ie I would rather have a couple year older bike with lower miles. I can deal with the hear isues of a Gen1 bike, but the thought of having to tear into an engine to fix a TICKING VALVE TRAIN realy worries me and being stranded while on a road trip with a bad ignition swith also concerns me.

Lets say I get either of the 2005 bikes I'm looking at with 10K and 15K miles. How common with these issues be? Both bikes are original owner machines and wrre dealer serviced with all records and according to the sellers neither of these issues were addressed on eithr bike.

"less issues"?
Yeah, they're all on this site.

Engine ticking, less heat, ignition issue, there's more........
Equally on this site are the details of each:

Ticking: rare and honor-fixed by Yamaha

Heat: Rider specific sensitivity

Ignition: Again rare

Keep in mind that the amount of research this site did toward the rare ticker documents the issue far more extensively than the actual % of events would appear to justify. That the process is so well documented is a good thing but not weighted equal to events. Same with the ground spider documentation of Gen 2. An unanticipated ground spider failure will leave you stranded. A ticking engine won't. Neither need be a surprise in the single-digit % occurances and an enterprising owner can plan ahead on the ground spider fix.

Sold the Futura today. Should have my cash together by next weekend to start shopping for my FJR! Fiund a couple nice low mile 2005s close to home. One ABS and one non ABS.

And that's what kinda worries me. The Gen2 guys act like Gen1 bikes are a bad choice. I want to think the Gen1 bikes are a good choice too. I've never ridden a FJR and its a leap of faith. I've sold a perfectly good sport touring bike for myself to gain a bit more room for me and my girlfriend.
The Gen 1's arn't bad bikes, and ALL of them don't have issues.

Just saying there's less "chance" of you having an issue with a Gen 2.

I'm sure the Futura had some issues, after all it IS an Italian bike!

Just saying there's less "chance" of you having an issue with a Gen 2.
Tell that to the few FJR owners that have been stranded by the side of the road with a fried electrical harness. Gen 1 owners stranded have been an order of magnitude less.

Not saying ther's a LOT of problems percentage wise.

Welcome to my "kill file"......muahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!

I would like to get a Gen2, but looks like to get a Gen2 in my price range it'll likely be an AE model and with 30K miles or more. Im finding 10-15K mile Gen1's A models in the mid 6K price range within driving distance. I'm not opposed to an auto clutch model, but prefer a clutch I think. I have never ridden an AE model and perhaps I'm judging it unfairly.
I bought my 06 a year and a half ago for $6500 with 12k on the clock, 4 into 1 Muzzy, PC3 and heated grips. Flawless condition. Shop around and you can find deals.

Looks like Im getting everything I wanted....... gen2 2007 abs low miles 12K miles and a trunk and even the fastest color! Cant wait till Saturday!

Fastest color? You're getting a 2007 painted Black!!??

If you want to hide from the cops you get a black one..... if ya want to outrun them ya get a red one...

Red is my fav color...too bad they don't make a FJR in Red.

That 2007 is a nice bike and a nice color....but it ain't Red.

candy red metalic
Is that what Yamaha calls it? Looks like a Burgundy color to me, maybe a Candy Burgundy, certainly not Red.

I like the color though!
Nope. Yamaha doesn't do it for the FJR. Look to the R1 for that color of red... or to my FJR.
