The manual for my CBR1100XX is very clear when describing the sequence for checking valve clearances. However, I can't quite figure it out when reading the FJR1300 Service Manual.

For the Blackbird the sequence is:

Turn the crankshaft clockwise so that the T mark on the ignition pulse generator rotor aligns with the index mark on the ignition pulse generator rotor cover. At this position, you can check the clearances for the Intake Valves for cylinders #1 and #3.

Then turn the crankshaft 1/2 turn (180 degrees) to check the Exhaust Valves for cylinders #2 and #4.

Then turn the crankshaft 1/2 turn (180 degrees) to check the Intake Valves for cylinders #2 and #4.

Finally, turn the crankshaft 1/2 turn (180 degrees) to check the Exhaust Valves for cylinders #1 and #3.

What's the sequence for checking the clearances on the FJR1300?

No but, I've finally read enough additional information to come to understand that the Intake and Exhaust valves are both checked on cylinder #1 then both are checked on cylinder #2, then both are checked on cylinder #4 and finally.. both are checked on cylinder #3. In other words, check both the Intake and Exhaust on one cylinder at a time.

I thought that they would be checked more like they are on the Blackbird but that doesn't appear to be the case on the FJR1300.

The sequence doesn't matter. You can see from the position of the cam lobes which valves are free and which are being acted on by the cam. Just check the free ones then turn the crank to free the others and check them.

Be sure to rotate the crankshaft three times between each check. This serves no purpose, other than to increase billable hours. Refer to the FJR repair manual and songbook for further instructions.

Is it not true that on some engines the valve clearance spec isn't necessarily measured at maximum clearance but rather the specified degree? Not sure about the FJR - so I sincerely ask the question.
