Sharing rides and YouTube challenges

What bitrate are you producing and uploading to YouTube? Also is it a constant or variable bitrate?

Anyone else notice inconsistent content formatting from YouTube.

1. The graphic image image of riding into a sunset at the top of the channel page easily fits on computer but did not scale down on a phone and title text is truncated.

2. YouTube seems to put text at the bottom of all shorts. On a phone the template graphic used in the beginning of video of the “use the pull of” short is fine but on a computer the bottom text YouTube adds is overlayed on bottom part of the template graphic.


In case somebody is wondering why not join a YouTube question and ask forum. The wife is also trying to promote this forum via the tags and other meta-data. And quite frankly, we trust a lot of the information here more than other sources and we hate joining and registering at tons of places, spreading out our email and other information more than necessary.

I'm learning as I go too. This first link is the very first video I posted. I had no clue about frames and resolution. It's just raw video from a GoPro 9Black. I want to redo this video because after the first minute and a half the riding gets fun.



This next video was after I played a little bit with an editor (Power Director). The riding itself was fairly mundane but I learned how to add music and subtitles.



Still trying to figure out why there are moments of clarity then blurriness.

See the comments above about uploading in 2k or higher.

There is apparently sometimes when high FPS might help but our experiments did not show consistent results but we may have had low bitrate and variable bitrate going against us. We just default to 2k uploads.

It seems the the positioning of the camera and the way she framed the shots actually captures more realism and perspective of dragons intense nature.

We are considering paying for music membership. Thoughts on her current choices of free music and suggestions for a service to invest in? Paying $120 plus a year for a membership is not trivial. Especially since there is no revenue generation.

I have noticed similar issues with blurring on occasion that I didn’t expect. Other than uploading at 2k or higher to force the better encoder I am wondering if messing with bitrate can help.

Are you using variable or constant bitrate? I think Power Director may not default to constant. This may let YouTube attempt to compress more which hurts quality

Still researching why the direct link I shared for the second episode of our first trip to TotD ( Tail of the dragon) is playing with the lower quality encoder on my iPhone. So I’ll drop an embedded link in the mean time. Maybe this will proceed the higher quality playback for an iPhone? But it dies appear the play back on computer should allow the HD resolutions up to 1440.



There are also differences in the play back from an embedded link and direct link. If anyone knows why much of the controls and options are missing from the embedded link please share.

My video bitrate is around 16kbps, not sure what they ended up being on Youtube though.

That looks like the built in default profile template setting.

If you’re happy with the results then great. You can make a custom template and increase the bitrate if you like which might help reduce some of the compression youtube does.

What might help as much or more is figuring out how to make sure PD is using a constant bitrate instead of a variable bitrate. We are still researching options ourselves.

I really enjoyed checking out your videos and love your enthusiasm for capturing and creating something great for you and others to enjoy. Seems we have quite a bit in common. First of all I lived much of my life in Virginia from Richmond to Va Beach and even Goochland. I rode motorcycles all during those years all over the state and usually take rides up there a couple times a year from SC which is my home now on my 2016 FJR. Love Virginia's countryside.

Secondly I have always been into photography and videography and have been recording my motorcycle rides/adventures since there was technology available. I have more Mini-DV's than you can count back when HD was just a hope given the lousy resolution of 720x480 at the time. I stated buying GoPro's when they first came out and still have some of the really original stuff. Like you, I am into 360 using the GP Max and also use the Hero 11 to created my videos. I use GP Player to edit my 360 videos and Cyberlink PowerDirector to edit the rest and create the final product. I gave Adobe PP a try for awhile but found for my uses I could get by with PowerDirector for far less cost plus it was so much easier to use.

I have encountered the same issues with YouTube that you have. Everything is compressed and buffers etc. so I use Vimeo for my videos. Yes you pay for it but here the ole adage I find is true, "You get what you pay for" Most all of my riding videos are with friends that encompass what we do off the bike at destinations, with photos, and of course music. Finding the right music can be the hardest part of the process for me. I keep those private. As opposed to road only videos that you might watch once these age well and become priceless over time. I got away from straight through the windshield endless roads videos along time ago. 360 with transitions etc. have brought some life back to road videos however and have started making some of my favorite rides. They are really the only public videos I have on Vimeo for motorcycling. One thing I love to do with 4 and 5K video is create photos from frames aka Snapshots. Almost unlimited high rez frames to create a shot you would never get off the bike. Going through 360 video and getting incredible photos has become a favorite thing to do. Anyway sorry for the long response but thought I would share my experiences from over 20 years with you who is just starting out.

Thank you for taking the time to watch the videos and write such a thoughtful response. You know the effort and time that’s put into the videos. I’ve never played with adobe, to me power director seems more user friendly with the ability to expand as I learn. I’m still learning, but having fun. I’d love to see some of your videos
