I've been reading about Rotella oil being used in this forum and in others and was wondering what fellow FJR riders think.

Thanks for your input.

Don't use that shit.. Plenty of piss poor advice here aboot oil if you look for it.. You will die and your friends will eat your offspring it you use non- specific oil in the FJR.

Trust me, I've been down that road.. Funeral expenses weren't worth the savings.

yes, only oil I'll use (big bang for the buck and available at any WalMart)

my '04 has 160k miles on it

if you google search "oil site:fjrforum.com"

there's thread after thread about oil, with no agreement or chance of agreement...everyone has their own opinion on gas, oil, filters, tires, etc

three, two, one, NERPT

take care and keep your skin thick with all the goofballs around here !!!

Mike in Nawlins'

I used T6 on my last oil change and my mpg has dropped by at least 3.

My turn signals also blink slower.

I use Rotella in both my '06 FJR and my'08 GL1800. I use Rotella T 15w-40w in both. With a 4k mile oil change interval you are absolutly wasting $$$ using sythetic oil. Rotella T is JASO certified and says so right on the bottle.

What??? I thought after the initial 600 mile oil change that the oil and filter were rated for 100k miles. Why would anyone waste their money changing perfectly good 40k mile oil??

I rotate my tires every 3k, but buy new ones every 6k, leave the oil for atleast 40k.. and I use WD40 on the chain ALWAYS.

No, no, no! You are supposed to change the air in the tires every 3K. With a fresh air change the tires last much longer. You can still rotate them every 6K.

Using Wild Dawg 40 on the chain is a big mistake also. It will collect dust which will weigh down that side of the bike. The bike will constantly want to lean in only one direction!

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=120887&st=0 Brother Myke just ignore these whining, selfish, childish and bullying tools! Here is the definitive thread on Rotella T6 Oil prepared by the FJR Forum Guru on Rotella: Mister ShinyPartsUp of Roseburg, Oregon.

SPU has prepared an 11 page document outlining the superiority of Rotella T6 Oil, a simple private message to ShinyPartsUp will result in a copy of this treatise mailed to your door step immediately. SPU even cooks fried chicken in Rotella!

Oh I'm not worried, I can dish it out with the best of them.

Thanks for the link and the SPU info. I'm due for a oil change and just found out about Rotella (n00b). I'm also about to embark on a trip to Alberta and Back and will need to have an other change done during that trip.

Myke, I can't tell you how it would perform in your FJR but I use the T6 synthetic in my Duramax. I ran the conventional Rotella T 15W-40 up to 30K, then switched to the synthetic. I have Exhaust Gas Temp and Boost Pressure gauges and the truck is completely stock. I ran the truck before and after, checked the gauges at 55,60,65, and 70 mph. Same road, same ambient temp, same approximate wind direction and velocity. No noticeable difference in the gauges. Almost 0.75 mpg difference, the synthetic being better. Maybe better diesel? I don't know. Using T6 synthetic for 60K miles now, probably a waste of $$ but it makes me feel better. No, I have not tried it in the motorcycle.

Sorry for the earlier sarcasm, I jumped on the bandwagon. Sooo many threads on oil here...

Good Lord! We've had GAS threads?

And I'm not talking about the bean related ones, I've seen THOSE!

most everything you wanted to know about oil...toward the bottom is info about motorcycle oil

https://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Oils1.html

I've gotten tired in the mountains (riding south on the Moonshiners 28 for 130 miles) and my careless, high rpm riding for hours on end overheated the engine.

Eventually the clutch went away as I look down and have max hot temp gauge.

Pulled into the nearest turn off. Hissing and steaming when I parked it...I believe the Rotella full synthetic easily paid for itself that day.

30 minutes later all was well and riding a couple more hours to the hotel on straightaway roads and the rest of the trip, the bike was fine and normal.

Dang Mikey, you do the craziest shit. Something else was wrong there. I've done hours of high rpm riding and never seen over 3 bars on my FJR.

I've also lost my cooling fan when doing slow riding and seen the blinking 6th temp bar telling me I was overheating. As soon as I got up to speed, greater than 50mph or so, the temp came right back down to normal. Even without the fan.

You had some issue going on. Maybe that POS synthetic Rotella was CAUSING your overheating!!!

:p

mine moves from 3 to 4...mostly warm weather here...summer temps are 4 bars constantly

(Gen 1 with 6 bar temp gauge)

twice...2 different engines...curvy mountain road...2nd gear lazy, no brakes, twist throttle to speed up, close throttle to slow down...over and over for a couple hours...bikey no likee after mile after mile in the hot of the afternoon, I guess

course, it's the same radiator and fan...fan runs fine idling in my garage every time after a ride

yep, my life is unique

Interesting. Same Gen I as you. Have been riding everyday in the 110+ temps of summer in Phoenix. The only time I see 4 bars is if I am stopped for a while.

Mike, if you put a light behind the radiator, can you see it from the front? Just thinkin' there might be an issue with yer koolin' system there.

Oh, yeah. There's water in it an' everthang, too, right?
