Howdy folks. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on when to shift to maximize all 5 gears. The factory recommended shift points are fine and all, but I feel like I can get more out of the bike. Thanks in advance.

If you shift to maximize all 5 gears you will run out of island before you hit red line in 4th gear

Run every gear up to 6,700 to 7,000 rpm where the engine hits peak torque then shift anyplace between there and 9,000 rpm. Be aware that this can cause one wheel riding in the lower gears.

When you feel the engine screaming -- not HEAR it -- that's when you shift. I suppose you could do that for a short distance on H-2 or H-3 .....

The FJR has the torque to pull hard in any gear if you're above 3,000 rpm. My signature suggests that second gear is safe -- which is true if you stay below 6,000 rpm -- but you can exceed 70 mph in second gear, too.

As you probably know, the ideal shift point depends on several things: acceleration rate, terrain, and passenger loading. It also depends on whether you're maximizing fun, adrenaline, gas mileage, or impressing the Honolulu PD vehicle two lanes over.

As you probably don't know, this Forum loves the opportunity to pounce on newbies asking open-ended questions. Especially on Fridays. Buckle your seat belt, sonny.

At New England Dragway I made a lot of runs down the strip on a lot of different days experimenting with shift points on separate runs. I found that the quickest elapsed times came when shifting around 8,700 rpm and slowest times when shifting just before the first rev limiter shut down 2 cylinders. If you shift like that regularly on the street you will need to have a quick draw wallet to get your driver's license out for all the local officers :lol:

Try sneaking onto Wheeler Air Base and rip up the runway, hope they don't mind.

Don't lug it, just shift it. Gas is cheap, rev it up some for more fun.

 
The day that I have to worry about "precise shift points" is the day I find a different bike. This ain't a c90. FJR's have torque to spare anywhere above 3000 (as previously pointed out).

I'm riding for fun, not for science. Mine stays between 3000 and 8000. Beyond that, the next thing on my mind is lunch.

 
Regarding shifting, the first time I had rearsets with GP shifting (reversed), it was VERY odd, to say the least. I wonder if I can arrange to have GP shifting on my FJR. Hmmm.......
