I'm with jestal and rad -- I sometimes have a hell of a time determining what is and what isn't "political" or more accurately: "likely to lead to political content."

I'm not necessarily in favor of fostering partisan political discussions about candidates or officeholders, but short of that, I'd favor moving other "political" and potentially rift inducing material to a special page rather than locking down threads or deleting the good with the bad. That opinion is mostly based upon the view that it seems a bit over the top and too PC to be having an educational and interesting thread on mechanical issues or on receiving a traffic citation getting edited and/or to have scoldings for relatively innocent rants.

Hope you don't stay away long, jestal.

As an additional thought: what I wouldn't mind seeing edited out are rude comments -- whether I made them or someone else made them -- out of the original post and out of the ones quoting it. But the "likely to lead to political content" edits honestly baffle me most of the time. Not that that's real important -- I'm just a guest here.

Let's face it. A lot of the things we do are affected by politics of some kind.

While nobody in his right mind would visit this forum to start a political debate, I think treating any discussion that might turn political as radioactive waste is pointless and unnecessary.

One of the reasons why I think this Forum far surpasses any other board I've been in contact with (m/c and other subjects) is the level of intelligence and maturity of many posters (and then, of course, there's TWN, too :p ).

I think we stand a pretty good chance of being able to steer clear of purely partisan debates, while touching upon issues that affect our favorite form of transportation.

The one thing I'm afraid of hearing is the sound of Obersturmfuehrer Neumann's hobnailed boots in the hallway again

I would like to thank the admins for letting this thread run the course, even though it deviated from the original topic at least twice.

I humbly submit that any posts concerning what kind of threads, editing of threads, board policies, etc, be started in a NEW thread and let this one die a noble and humble death. Or, better yet, PM the admins off line. If enough voices are heard, the policy may change. Isn't that the way it went when political threads were 'outlawed'?

Realize it's not easy being an Admin with such a disparate group as us. Some of us are correct, the rest of you wrong; some of us are liburaaals and some of us are red neeeks. But we all ride bikes - and most of us FJR's - so we do have *something* in common. That's what we need to stay focused on.

I believe the guy who funds the site owns the site.. and kudos to Slappie for everything done. He enlisted help, the current crop of admins, to admin the site. If SlapnPop don't want political debate, so be it. BTW, many members agree with this. It cost money for bandwidth, folks, and as much as I want to yank YankTar's liberal chain... :yahoo: (he is sooooo easy)...

Would I like to see a throw-down area and let the **** ride? You betcha. I have STRONG convictions and will burn the bandwidth down to make you see my point of view. But - I ain't paying the bills, know what I mean? It all boils down to this - Slap is in charge, the members spoke, the Admins enforce, and if you don't like it, start your own site.

Having said all this, I think some actions, both from the Admin and poster perspective, may have been over the top - then again, I don't know what happened, so who am I to say.

I will say this though, if Jestal truly stays away, I will miss his posts severely. My life revolves around technical things. By day, I'm a complete and total server geek.. details, details. If I had 20% capacity as an engineer (Jestal) or real-freaking-world experience like Radman, I'd be really happy. But I don't - we all do what we can and envy the rest. That's why I so enjoy Rad's and Jestal's post.

So ******* there.

By the way - I have not received any warning from the admins or personal PM saying shut the f**k up or anything else.

Personally, I'd like to see a somewhat political section that simply purges every X number of days.. That way I could have fun with ol' YankTar... and if he proved me wrong it would be long gone after X number of days... .

Second to last thought - TeeRex, SkiBum, Rad, Jestal, TWN, and others - ya'll done really, really good. Measured responses, at least the ones that I could see, were/are greatly appreciated. Good job guyz.

Ok - I'm off the soap box now... as thread originator, Admins, please kill this freaking thread.

Oh, do not worry. It's on it's way.............

:****:

I must say, I am a bit disappointed. Here I finally got some time to come here and admonish you for hijacking your own thread AFTER you were so quick to admonish others that did the same but here you went and got all sappy and touchy-feely on me. Enough of the warm fuzzies already you friggin liberal................errrrrrrrr..................nevermind.

That is not a request we typically honor, but in this case, perhaps it is the best thing.

Your wish is my command.............
