At the end of the season last year I had the left side bag pop off my 2008 FJR and bounce down the road like a football. Picked up the bag and of course the pretty side took most of the damage but also the lock and unlock mechanism to open the bag is not functioning properly. I don't want to spend the $750.00 they want for a new side bag, so has anyone taken one of these apart, I have all the rivets out and it still will not come apart. I can't see anything that is keeping it together and can't find any assembly drawings anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

From what I recall, the outer skin is glued to the inner, making it damn near impossible to separate them. I've been tempted to run a dremel tool along the edge to separate them to get a better look at the locking mechanism and possibly change out the plastic locking tab (the thing that retracts when you raise the handle) to an aluminum one.

If I had an old, beat up, road rashed bag........

Yea, it was either in here or one of the recent eastern meets where somebody's side bag skin "delaminated". It revealed that the skin is glued on.

I believe there is soemthing about the skin is attached to the hinges and the clasps are attached to the inner and if you over load or really compress something in them they can eventually pop. I never had one apart to know how true that is.

Thanks Guys, it is not the door skin I am trying to get off it is the other half that attaches to the bike. I can pry away along the outer edge but it seems to be held together along the back wall in the middle where the lock that holds it on the bike is. It would not surprise me if they glued it together and tried to deceive you with the rivets going through the wall.

It's glued together. Thoroughly. Except for the lids. They're glued together a bit less thoroughly.

Yes, BOTH of them. Within a couple days of each other. Even though one was a replacement ond several years younger than the other.

As for the main body of the box, no one's had one apart that worked after dissection. Kinda like that frog in high school.
