When I was taking my side cases off the other day I saw a small screw fall from the right side case and hit the floor. The screw was one of two that bolt the steel locking bar to the locking cylinder. So I decided to check both side cases for loose screws on the locking cylinders, all screws were loose. I added a little bit of Blue Removable Thread Lock to each screw and retighten them. Hopefully they will not come loose again. The screws have the Tamper Proof Torx head.

Suggestion would be to check these screws on your side cases.

That has happened on every Year! The dealers are too stupid to read the instructions where it says "LOCKTITE THE SCREWS!"

Check FAQ and you will see this.

Never mind what the two trolls above said. The screws coming loose? THIS WAS YOUR OWN FAULT!! How so? you ask. Well, because you obviously need to have less of a real life. You see, if you had less of a real life, you would spend more time on this forum. And if you spent more time on this forum, you would be all-knowing in things FJR.

And you would have come across THIS THREAD.

And then your screw never would have popped out. You're lucky. You could have lost the lock, or even the sidebag itself.

Simple, eh?

So forget about job, family, anything a *normal* person pays attention to, and become a worthless FJRForum junkie with no life. Much like twowheelnut.

I'll take this one.

I am so jealous of you you I really shouldn't be helping, but here you go:

You will need a T10 Torx security driver. The "security is important because the Torx screw has a little stand up in the middle. If you don't have the right tools, do not attemts to drill out the center ***.

You did well to find the loose screw before you had a lost screw. Loctite® comes in different strengths, each has a color. Blue is "medium" you want red "High-Strength".

*this reply contained a remark which should not be taken literally*

That photo of your garage has me dealing with some serious envy issues. *that was another one*

I did go to Sears and purchased the Torx that I needed and did use the blue removal Loctite. I will be checking the screws for a while and if they start loosing up again I use the red Loctite to secure them. Thanks for the info.

Oh yes, and the garage floor cleans up very easy with soap and water. :good:

Wifey and I just got back from a really hot ride 106 degree.

I somehow didn't see that your original post already contained the detailed solution. :dribble:

Just as a little helpful note: The Garmin security Torx screw is the same size as the lock screws. So the little driver you get with the Garmin works perfectly.

 Thanks Moosehead, I was just about to go to Sears to purchase one, but you saved me the trip and the deniro as I have one of those for my Garmin 2730.

>>You will need a T10 Torx *security* driver. The "security is important because the Torx screw has a little stand up in the middle.<<

Is that *security* word the reason my T10 Torx doesn't fit? Where does one get a *security* driver?

I looked at mine and could see a bit of locking fluid on the screw heads. If mine came out, I'd bust the dealer's balls and if there was damage, I'd make a warranty claim.

Wake up, dealers.

If your dealer's "mechanics" are as sharp as mine, they probably also neglected to install the clear plastic stick-on paint protectors that go on the body work under the saddlebags. I found these in one of the saddlebags next to the installation instructions which, by the way, were still sealed in a plastic bag.

Most tool stores will sell security Torx bits, sometimes in sets. Try a Tool store that caters to Machinists if you just want to buy a single bit for cheap. Just make sure to ask for a 'security T-10 Torx bit' and double check that the bit they give you has the hole in the center of it.

Thank you OCfjr... I will seek one tomorrow.... and let you know.

EDIT: Yes, indeed... it is the SECURITY Torx 10 you need. I bought a kit of security bits at the local hardware store for $10. Thanks.

Oh, and my sidecase screws were properly Locktited and tightened by my dealer.... now I know for sure.

Okay, call me stupid. I just found this thread after losing my whole right side bag lock the other day. Guess, I have been too busy RIDING to be reading this forum! A replacement lock cylinder from Yam goes about $90  but my fix cost about seven bucks and a couple hours last night. Also, I have to carry an extra key now for just that bag. The locksmith sells a generic cabinet lock 1 and 1/8 inches that worked fine. They usually call them Cam locks). I had to dremel down the underside where the lock fits through a bit to get enough clearance for the locknut. Also, I had to make my own "tailpiece" by welding a little carefully bent piece to the stock square-hole tailpeice. With a little adjustment, I would say this works almost better than the original and you can't really see a difference, except the new lock sits "up" a bit higher.

I can provide more details if anyone is interested. I just couldn't part with $90 bucks to insure my key fit into all my locks!

p.s. and yes I have checked the other side now!

You should have gone back to the dealer and screamed! The installation instructions that they didn't read say to use loctite! This was their **** up!

The mounting instructions for mine were still in the sealed bag inside one of the saddlebags when I took delivery. And, this was the first '06 FJR the dealer had received this year.

And when the front wheel comes off at speed will they also say "Yea, well we didn't open the bag with those instructions either."?

The bag instructions were the same for the 03', 04', 05' & 06'! If yours was the first that is even more reason to read the instructions! :angry2:
