There I was, washing my new toy, when I spotted this:

It looks like Yamaha have stuck a piece of aluminium-backed foam tape(?) under the side-stand switch.

Definitely not on my '06. Anyone know when they started putting this on?

It's on my '07, but deteriorated to the point of falling off.
Certainly doesn't look very substantial.

Not only when but why? Maybe I missed all the failed side stand switch posts.
I think I've seen one or two posts that might have been about sidestand switches, but certainly not many (seems like Yamaha is fixing a problem we don't normally suffer from). I was also trying to find clues as to the build date of my bike, obviously from Yzerman19's post that isn't going to help me.

That fell of my '09 the second time I washed it. I didn't know where it came from or what it did. 9,000 miles later I really miss it! Wonder if it has a part number...

The engineer who thought of this should be sent to bed without his/her supper. Geez, what a half-assed solution to a problem that doesn't exist!

The picture now has me thinking it may need more attention.... It is an adhesive backed foil, and may protect the switch from exhaust heat. Are we seeing side stand switch failures due to excessive heat, or should I go back to sleep?

I wonder if it is related to a Code 19 problem? Recently I am experiencing this problem. Bike will cutoff at a stop. Then really have to keep putting side stand up and down until the code goes away. Then engine will fire back up. If you think about it, it is a really bad place for a switch to sit constantly being hit with grime, water, heat and grease while underway. Maybe Yamaha started putting this shield around the switch housing to delay switch failure. :-(

Delay it for how long? Two days? If there really is a switch failure issue, this is a pretty chicken-**** way to address it.
I agree it is a very chicken **** way to address it. The switch is so lame, too. The least bit of grime getting in there will make it get hung up and not complete the circuit. What pisses me off is I cannot get the tiny screws out to open up the switch. Don't have the right tools, the dinky screws are lock tited in there and the phillips head immediately starts stripping out.
