smell gas

I had the tank pulled up today doing some work on my '06. Disconnected the 2 wire connections, but did not mess with any fuel lines. After putting it back together, I smell gas when it is running. No smell when shut off. What did I do?

Maybe pinch the overflow from the gas tank, but not sure why you would smell it unless you gassed up or sloshed the gas into the neck of the tank?

Other than that I got nothing.

+1 - Lift the tank again and check your overflow line's clearance from any pinch points.

I'd check to see if fuel is leaking at the fuel line connector that you removed/installed, then double check the overflow hose. Make sure it is routed back where it came from.

If you smell gas, you should b able to see it.

Thanks guys, after letting the bike sit for a couple of hours, I was unable to recreate the problem on the way home. No gas smell. I stopped and put in 2 gallons, as it was low, and no fuel odor all the way home. It's a mystery to me, but will keep an eye on it.

In the interest of safety, I'd lift the tank and take a good look around to make sure there is no leak. It only takes a few minutes.

I know I would just for curiosity's sake.

I knew when I did this to make sure of the hose from reading on here. I too would tend to think you may have just sloshed gas around some how and 1 drop of gas smells. However for two screws, and loosening of the bolt at the rear of the tank, I would have to know.

It sure beats the alternative.

May have been a small spill from raising the tank, evaporated on the warming engine, smelled it, and it's gone now.

I had to tip my tank up when it was full. Some gas spilled out of the overflow.
