Sockets storage in your workshop

I have, seemingly, 500 sockets for wrenching on my bikes and cars. I'm not a Mr Nascar, squeeky clean garage kind of guy and my sockets always end up all over the place and it takes me 10 minutes to find the right size! I've thought about using a Craftsman rolling tool box - and that may work but they can be pricey. Plus - you still deal with a buch of sockets rolling around in a drawer. Any one have some good ideas for socket storage?

Along with the Craftsman sockets......Craftsman Socket Organizer keep my set of Metric and SAE organized. 5 drawers for me include Metric Standard, Metric Deep, SAE Standard, SAE Deep, and one for the various drivers, extensions, and gadgets.

And the toolboxes are price, but those stainless units at Costco are a good investment.

Perhaps as important as easy spotting of sockets I find myself using 6 point and 12 point more appropriately and not having to buy replacement sockets that I used to seem to lose.

I agree with Iggy

I have a craftman 15 drawer tool box. They make the strips for attaching sockets to. I have all my sockets in order on these strips. They are called interlocking socket holders.

I use old fashioned clip-n-rail socket holders ( https://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/KD-2531.html ). Hang them on pegboard on the wall.

I've got the sockets on rails that I lay in the toolchest drawers. The rails I picked up really cheap at sears a few years ago.

Keeps 'em separated by metric and US and helps keep 'em easy to find (provided I replace them properly when done using them).

Me too, except I get the plastic ones at Sears and a couple baggies of the extra clips. They seem to hold better than the metal ones. It deals with the weird stuff really well too, like 36mm & 42mm sockets, and 14mm & 18mm Allen keys. I think I originally picked them up as a tip from this forum a year ago, as a matter of fact.

I have the metal and plastic from Craftsman. Definitely go with the plastic - they're much easier to use. I've even seen them at Harbor Freight where I'm sure they're cheaper.

I got the magnetic ones a while back and like them more than most of the other options. I especially like the magnet on the back that allowed me to stick them on the outside of my rolling toolbox, leaving drawers free for other miscellany. I don't remember paying that much for 'em tho...

Looks like I've got the same thing as Iggy. Got the black and silver ball bearing craftsman rolling toolbox on sale a few years back, and made up for the sale discount with the socket organizers (highly recommended), 6 point sockets, deep sockets, etc., etc., etc. Yeah -- I'm a tool slut who can't get out of the hardware store without thoroughly browsing the tables with tools on sale either.

Harbor freight tools has the drawer insets for rachets and sockets and another for wrenches. The fir right into my Craftsman rolling tool chest. They were half the price and function well over the last 6 years.
