Well, I took ANOTHER ride today, and I think I got some really good photos.

I had a list of "to do's" that needed attention, and as I reviewed them, a decision had to be made.

 • laundry
 • clean the gutters
 • change the oil in my truck
 • update my Christmas card list
 • Scout Sonora Pass on my FJR for the benefit of my fellow forumites
All tempting tasks, but I decided on the one that involved riding a motorcycle.

I had hoped to round up a few of my forum brothers,

and make it a group thing-see post #13, but I reckon I did a poor job of selling the ride, or that little Quincy thing wore them out.

I waited on the corner till well after sunrise, but

nobody showed up. I wish Haulin' Ashe or Bustanut Joker lived around here.

They'da gone with me. They LIKE riding nice roads.

So I shoved off ----- alone. sniffle

Left my place in the burbs of Sacramento, California well before 6 am.

The route - (can't do the display map thing) - 49 all the way down to Sonora (how many miles is that MadMike?), and then up beautiful

Hwy. 108, high (9000+ft.) over the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, and down into the high desert, just west of the Nevada state line.

Then north on 395. I went past my Hwy. 88 turnoff, all the way into Nevada and Topaz lake, where I got gas, ate my lunch sammy,

hydrated myself, and then turned back south to the eastbound run up Monitor Pass. Over the top again, down into Markleeville,

up over yet another pass (Carson-named after the late night talk show host I think?), past the Kirkwood Ski area,

more mountain lakes, and then back down toward Sacramento.

Whew. Good thing I got a big blue Yamaha.

Here we go.

Heading south on 49 - EARLY.

You sure know how to hurt a guy.. :glare:

today I:

 1. Changed tractor coolant
 2. Fixed mountain bike flat tire
 3. Repaired water leak (kind of needed, I like to shower)
 4. Trimmed roses
 5. Fertilized/weed killed lawn
 6. Picked up pine needles
 7. Built up jumps on mx track
 8. Repaired hedge trimmer
 9. Trimmed hedge (while trimmer still ran, now it's dead again)
 10. Looked at my FJR..
Thing I did NOT do today:..

 1. Go on ride with Old Michael
It really looks like Old Michael had a much funner day than me.
Great ride report, I enjoy your style. A 5 hour run to Sac town, then 5 hours of riding, then 5 hours back might be a bit much for me, as I'm old and the Candy Butt Association president and all.. but someday, OM, I look forward to a ride with you. Until then, living your neck of the wood vicariously.

Man, you are speaking my language!

The areas you rode are some of my fave's. I rode to Jackson & back last Saturday (from near Fresno).

Next time, wait for lunch to go to Markleeville. There's this great little sandwich place across from the old hotel that's always full of weekend riders (both kinds of bikes).

Looking forward to the rest of the pics!

Hmmmmm, that might be a good plan for next weekend. All the campers will be settled by Saturday, so Sat and Sun could be good riding......

And, yes, the sandwich shop and the general store always have motorized and pedal bikes parked all around.

Lessee....Hwy 88 to 89 to Markleeville then back over Hwy 4, The temps are forecast for the mid-80s....

Oh, sorry for the hijack...GREAT PICTURES, MICHAEL!

Butte Mountain...but you were close. ;)

Man, you are way too energenic on those distance shots! :dribble: Next time I'll come along just for shuttle service. :yahoo:

Great reporting and pictures Mike, I do like your slant on things.

Nice ride report. Wish folks would report more for those of us who are living in..... scenic landscape challenged areas.

OldMike:

Now here's what you do this weekend.

Beings you are in Sac, take 50 to Tahoe, then go over Luther Pass to Hope Valley, then come back over the Sierras via Carson Pass/Hiway 88 and spend the night in Jackson. Then, the next morning go south on 49 to Angels Camp and head up Hiway 4 and go back over the Sierra over Ebbets Pass and have said lunch in Markleeville. Then go over Monitor Pass to 395, then go south to 120 and come back over Tioga Pass through Yosemite and head back to Sac.

Now THAT'S a ride!

Where are the Sherpas and the Yaks?
Doc, I got your Yak right here! :D

[*]Trimmed hedge (while trimmer still ran, now it's dead again)

[*]Looked at my FJR..

Geez, those are weekday evening chores!

Trimmed roses AND built up jumps on MX track? You are one interesting human dcarver.

Thanks to all for the comments. Here are the pics of the rest of my Sunday. Thanks for viewing and responding.

The summit looking west, then east. Crisp, dry, clean air. Feeling great.

Met a couple on "holiday" from England - Leeds? - and they were stunned by the beauty of the area. They'd been to Yosemite,

just a few miles south, and were giddy looking at the surroundings. They were fair skinned folks, and had sustained a bit of

a burn from the California sun. Then I made 'em take a picture of me.

IMG_1194.jpg

Then down the east side. And yes, ...that is in fact Mt. St. Helens on the horizon.

IMG_1197.jpg

While glancing out at the lovely stuff in the distance, you can sometimes fail to see important stuff up close.

This photo satisfies all of my "scouting" duties. Watch for gravel and sand in some of the turns, especially east

of the summit. ......................... You're welcome!

IMG_1202.jpg

Beautiful and sobering.

IMG_1205.jpg

B idgepo t's a hell hole. Stay away from there.

IMG_1209.jpg

This town needs a friggin' GAS STATION! They could be like Kirkwood, and sell it for $9 a gallon.

IMG_1210.jpg

Just out of Markleeville - a fellow could really stretch an FJR's legs here, just to see how 135 feels.

(And I know every one of you NorCal riders has done it through here.)

IMG_1216.jpg

IMG_1221.jpg

Caples Lake. TROUT!

IMG_1223.jpg

Aaand finally. I was glad to see this sign. It's a great way to get from 88 to 50 to Sacto - sort of a shortcut home.

Lightly travelled. Never seen an LEO on it. Good asphalt. I love it.

Turned at the sign with delighted anticipation!

IMG_1229.jpg

And then -- DAMMIT!

IMG_1230.jpg

Turned back and went down 88 with the motorhomes and trucks and heat.

Could have ended better, but I ALWAYS enjoy the ride, no matter the circumstances.

Thanks for coming along.

Peace

Michael
