Sorry guys, I know from reading other posts that I'll probably get some crap for asking, and I've done a search, to no avail. Can I use Castrol GTX 10-40 in my feeger w/o a problem? Using a Pure 1 filter and really like the GTX products. Let the thrashing begin! Thx, Geezer

Most auto motor oils are really a commodity. Not a whole lot of diff. Some other oils makes a diff though, for the better. Read up.

Oil posts & links

Tons-O-oil & filter posts and links.

Also try searching by using Google and type - site:fjrforum.com, and then use your search parameters like, "oil viscosity", or "oil type" etc. You'll get more hits then you know what to do. You'll be reading a while.

I don't think you should use any oil.

Did you know Oil contributes to Global Warming... :)

The big deal with oils used in motorcycles is that they should be high in Zinc. It has something to do with preserving the cam faces. cars use hydraulic lifters and trucks have rollers, we just have metal faces and zinc works 'better'.

Unfortunately, many automotive oils do not have zinc (or their levels have been reduced to the point where they are not useful).

I change my oil religiously, but I use Castrol Grand Prix. It is a Motorcycle specific formulation.

Can't go wrong with amsoil...........................let's hear it...........

I generally use a 50/50 mix of Amsoil and Marvel Mystery Oil. Really loosens up the lifters. Can't go wrong here, smells good too

I prefer olive oil. Smells great and you can eat it too if necessary. :p

I tried blends of peanut and canola oil but only clogged my oil passages. I think chicks use body oil in theirs.... :dribble:

One of the truck oils would be best, Rotella, Delo, Delvac. All in 5-40 or 15-40 flavors.

'Scab': Castrol would have a different recommendation: Castrol MC oil info
'bramfrank': The only bike oil they offer in Canada is Grand Prix . . . makes you wonder.
There was a time when Castrol was the motorcycle oil brand and could be found, almost exclusively, in motorcycle shops -- it was a product of The British Empire's 'Burmah-Castrol Co.'. Darn-near all British bikes were 'weaned' on it.

Then, the American arm of the company prostituted themselves to every big-box/department store in the country and lowered the floor on pricing repeatedly -- until, no respectable motorcycle shop would touch the stuff.

It might be a good product, tho? Let us know....

You're welcome. :)

The shop I worked in in the late 60's early 70's bought oil for shop service in barrels. We had two barrels going all the time. I think they were 50 gallon drums. Each had a hand crank pump on it. One was Castrol and the other was Kendell. I'm thinking they were both 20W50. We would go to the barrel with a metal pitcher marked in quarts, and use that oil for oil changes. The bikes were all air cooled at the time.

I remember that the Kendell was cheaper than the Castrol by some small amount. I'm thinking maybe a dime or so a quart. There were no synthetic oil options. No friction modifiers in auto oil either. It was a simpler time. The oil was well under a dollar a quart to the customer... and it was a high profit item for the dealer when purchased in the barrels.

I wonder who might remember when they sold oil in glass bottles with a metal pour spout type lid? Those are my earliest memories of oil purchased for home oil changes. I've still got one of the bottles out in the shed.

To answer your question. I would not recommend using car oil an a FJR unless it does NOT have the "energy conserving" label on the back of the bottle (in the little circle). Reason being is car oil has friction reducing chemicals that can coat the clutch plates in the transmission and cause them to slip. I know people have run it with no problems but its not recommended.

good luck...

When I was a boy, we used to squeeze it right out of the dinosaur. . .
