Was riding my 2004 non-abs FJR today and the speedo and trip meters stopped working. Speedo showed 0 mph and trip meters stopped updating. Tach, coolant temp, fuel gauge, etc. continued to work ok. Bike ran fine.

The amber "engine trouble" warning light came on. At "key on" the speedo needle sweeps the dial and code 42 is displayed on the screen.

The speed sensor on the rear of the engine/transmission may have failed. I'll see if I can access the sensor's three-wire coupling and check for an output signal.

Maybe I can access the diagnostics and see the output from the sensor when the rear wheel is rotated.

Eventually things break.

Expensive sensor. Used ones are available on ebay.

It does sound like signal loss. I have experienced that once myself on a Super Tenere. In my case it was at a wire splice from a SpeedOHealer install. If you're not the original owner, you might check around to see if there is a wire splice or other connector repair that doesn't look stock. Under the seat or in other locations where the speed sensor wire is accessible. Check some of the write ups or the install instructions on the Healtech website for locations to access the signal wire.

I'm the original owner. Bought the bike new in 2003. The speed sensor circuit has never been touched.

I believe the AE models included this sensor but I'm not sure about the other 2006 and later models.

99K miles and 19 years.
