Is there a good way to attach a tender so that you don;t have to continually remove the cowl piece?
The chargers usually have a separate small 2 wire harness with them which you can fasten to the battery + & - (placed in the middle on the battery) and take the plug out of the bike's plastics, then it is just to plug it to the charger ... While riding try to hide it so that the occasional rain does not do any harm

Attach the tender pig tail to the battery and leave the end out. The SAE connector has a cover so I wouldn't worry about weather. An alternative is to install an unswitched fuse block like this BlueSea and then land the tender pig tail on it.

I have the 1st gen equivalent powerlet socket (in the right hand inner faring panel "D") that is wired directly (fused) to the battery. I use an SAE to Powerlet adapter to hook up a battery tender in the garage and also use it to power my tank bag when on the road. When needed it also provides the power to my 12V air compressor in case of a tire needs plugging and inflation.

On my other bikes (those with batteries located under the seats) I just run a conventional SAE pigtail out from under the seat and it can perform all of the same functions.

I used a spare end from the Gerbings harnesses-I had several extras from the seperate cables with each item-and made up a tender plug that plugs into my Gerbing harness on the bike. This made more sense to me as I don't have a distribution block block yet and the battery terminals won't fit another set of wires. I simply connected the SAE cable that came with the tender to the battery terminals and ran the SAE connector next to the brake lines. When not in use I use the short rubber strip that is part of the weatherproof connector as a lanyard and wrap it around the brake lines before putting the cover on.
